Discover the story of De Vere Tortworth Court
De Vere Tortworth Court, a Grade II listed Mansion House Hotel, is offering guests a rare opportunity to hear from the experts and delve into the history of the stunning, historic Mansion House and arboretum, throughout Heritage Open Days (13th – 22nd September 2019).
Recorded in the Domesday Book, the now De Vere Tortworth Court, was the ancestral seat of the Ducie family for over 350 years and was once used by the British Navy before becoming home to American serviceman in 1942. It is now a luxury country estate hotel.
Visitors can uncover the property’s colourful history with a series of exclusive expert talks not usually available to the public, where they can learn about the property’s fascinating past. Talks will be available every day during Heritage Open Days, from 2.30pm until 3.30pm. Guests can also explore one of Britain’s finest arboretums, located at De Vere Tortworth Court and home to more than 300 plant and tree specimens, set within the estate’s 30 acres of Gloucestershire parkland.
“De Vere Tortworth Court has a fascinating history spanning over 1200 years. Guests can discover plenty of interesting stories; from how the 3rd Earl of Ducie – a keen horticulturalist – created what remains one greatest arboretums in the British Isles in 1853, to when the Orangery was built in 1899 by architect, Ewan Christian, who designed the National Portrait Gallery in London,” said Raphael Herzog, General Manager at De Vere Tortworth Court. “De Vere Tortworth Court is an estate with many tales to tell and we are excited to provide our guests with an exclusive behind the scenes look.”
During their visit, guests can opt to indulge in afternoon tea, feasting on classic British sandwiches, scones and cakes, while learning about the history of De Vere Tortworth Court and the arboretum from the history experts. Afternoon tea is served daily during the exclusive Heritage Open Days talks, between 2pm and 4pm from Monday to Saturday and 2.30pm to 4pm on Sundays, priced from £21.95 per person.
