2018 Designer Awards

20 LUX - 2018 Designer Awards A West Country Practice, In Ex Design create exceptional Architecture, Interior and Landscape Design. Julie-Ann explores the firm’s service, offering more detail on how they ensure excellence for clients. “Based in Devon, In Ex Design are a team of professionals who produce high quality Architecture, Interior and Landscape Design. Thanks to our diverse range of skills, we are a one stop shop for all our clients’ design needs, from an empty site to soft furnishings, and everything in between. Uniquely, at In Ex Design we take a holistic approach to design, and undertake all aspects of a project in house. This provides a more integrated and complete package for our clients, and as such has a really positive impact on project outcomes. “Our wide ranging abilities allows us to support clients across several sectors and have a broad range of clients, from commercial enterprises to private residential clients. Our current project workload includes three brand new houses and several refurbishments, both with and without extensions. Our interiors team are busy on schemes which include the refurbishment of the Children’s Oncology Department at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and a detailed design scheme for a house on the River Teign, in Shaldon. We have also just completed a courtyard garden design in Lympstone and an office fit out in Oxford.” As In Ex Design works on such a vast array of projects, our judges at the 2018 LUX Designer Awards had plenty to choose from, but they gave the prestigious title of Best UK Residential Project to the practice’s work at Hillside, a stunning residential development. Until recently the house had been trading as a Bed and Breakfast. The In Ex Design is an award-winning team of Architects, Interior Designers and Landscape Designers, based near Exeter in East Devon and dedicated to creating truly unique designs. We invited Julie-Ann Clements to tell us more. client saw the potential of the building and the site and looked to convert it into a ‘forever home’, with a new extension, extensive internal refurbishments works and a comprehensive landscaping scheme to pull everything together. Julie-Ann is eager to share how her team created an outcome which met the client’s needs and exceeded their expectations. “Hillside, the project for which we have received this amazing award, was a truly brilliant scheme, and although it came with some challenges we are very proud to have overcome these. The house was an unusual shape, located in a conservation area and the décor was very old fashioned. On the positive side, the garden was a great size for a village plot and at the end was a copse and a stream. “With our design skills and vision, we designed a modern extension that, thanks to the uniquely shaped garden, concealed itself from the conservation area. We used a glass link to tie the old and the new parts of the building together and, with a clever interior scheme, we respected the individual character for each section of the house while at the same time creating a harmonious flow throughout. The garden was also a key part of the full project and spaces were created for dinning, relaxation and play. The extension also took advantage of the copse which visually expanded the site far beyond its physical limits.” Looking to the future, In Ex Design will be seeking to undertake even more projects that are as exciting and unique as Hillside and build upon the practice’s current, incredible success. One of the biggest challenges the firm constantly faces when delivering these projects is balancing the demands of their clients with the ever increasing expense that the architectural and interior design markets are seeing, as Julie-Ann highlights in her concluding comments. “When In Ex Design first began, its motto was ‘good design doesn’t need to cost the earth’. We still believe that in our hearts, but with the ever growing cost of construction, projects are becoming more expensive to deliver. We feel a huge weight of responsibility to our clients and their budgets. As such, we endeavour to take on projects where we can put realistic budgets in place. Often, we receive calls for smaller projects who we try to help as much as possible, but we cannot always meet their needs, so moving forward we are looking to adapt how we can deliver concepts for all budget levels to support a wider range of clients.” Client: Private Location: Lympstone, Nr Exeter, Devon Type: Modern Extension, Full Redesign and Refurbishment Including Integrated Landscaping Scheme Winner: Best UK Residential Project LUX Designer Awards 2018 Best Architecture & Interior Design Practice - South West England & Best UK Residential Project: Hillside Best Architecture & Interior Design Practice - South West England & Best UK Residential Project: Hillside DES18023 Company: In Ex Design Contact: Julie-Ann Clements Address: Studio 10, Woodbury Business Park, Woodbury, EX5 1AY, UK Phone: 01395 233807 Website: www.inexdesign.co.uk
