This year, Otherworld published Kubernik’s The Doors Summer’s Gone; and Pike’s own memoir 1964-1974: A Decade of Odd Tales and Wonders. This year also saw Otherworld’s DVD release of Pike’s Grumpuss 20th Anniversary Platinum Edition, performed live at Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, England, for the Save the Children Fund. This particular production of Grumpuss was a 1999 Chicago Film Festival INTERCOM Award winner for Special Achievement – Writing, and was the first epic narrative rhyme to be so honored, making it a truly special performance. Ultimately, in a market saturated with huge companies creating art, Otherworld focuses on talent and aims to showcase only the very best. With the advent of digital media technology, Hollywood studio production of music and movies became, more than ever, cottage industries. The huge studio lots are mostly rental facilities today, offering sound stages, wardrobe, makeup, prop department facilities, and “bungalows” (aka cottages), to house production offices when funded properties commence pre-production. The major Hollywood studios are now only responsible for about 20 movies per year, with all the rest of their product acquired for distribution from independent, or semi- independent producers. The major studios do provide a singular advantage during production when being on the lot enables an independent producer to rub elbows with moguls, agents, managers and stars, which may lead to bigger and more lucrative deals. Since its inception 2013, Otherworld has been publishing and marketing Pike’s original songs, books, and DVD productions, as well as designing and/or publishing related music and pop culture books for entertainment industry related entities. The firm draws on Hollywood’s extraordinary, underemployed talent pool to ensure that its clients receive highly skilled specialists and quality services. Part of Otherworld’s core focus is to bring Pike’s and other more or less celebrated, highly skilled artists’ work to new audiences. With audio tape and motion picture film effectively replaced by digital drives, and superior digital instrument samples, in 2013, Travis teamed with his brother Adam and applied the cottage industry model to Adam’s home studio, where they produced five music CDs and two audio theater CDs, now available to the public. In 2016, Travis took what remained of the 1966 cult film Feelin’ Good to Deluxe where they were able to marginally restore six musical sequences. While the pictures posted on YouTube leave something to be desired, State Records took the restored mono optical tracks and released a vinyl 45 of two songs Pike wrote and performed in the movie. State’s recording of “Watch Out Woman” and “The Way That I Need You” was named the number three single of the year in Shindig! magazine’s December, Best of 2017 issue. Otherworld Cottage Industries is Travis Edward Pike’s DBA, an independent association of highly-skilled colleagues in Los Angeles, California, home to Hollywood, the original entertainment capital of the world. As part of our overview of a selection of the winners from this years’ Global Entertainment Awards, we profile both the firm and Pike to learn more about how he publishes and creates unique art.
