Situated at 1,300m altitude, nestled in the small Walser village of Monbiel, lies traditional inn Gasthaus Hohwald, where locals and tourists meet for a chat and to enjoy good food and service. Originally the small business began as a simple shop that supplied the Monbielers with the essentials, however it became a restaurant in the 1980s. The beautiful Alpine atmosphere of the Höhwald, with its fragrant wood and noble fabrics, warm lights, cuddly furs, open fires, hunting trophies and dishes from Nani’s kitchen, make it a must-visit place for locals and tourists alike. Whilst guests are mainly people who own holiday homes and flats in Klosters, Gasthaus Hohwald can also cater for larger events such as birthdays and weddings, with the emphasis very much on providing excellent customer service for all. “We are hosts with a passion,” enthuses Silvia Dietrich, owner of the establishment. “We live for our guests and our profession. It is our vocation to be a good host and restaurateur. Quality and making our guests feel at home is our first priority.” Dishes at the restaurant are prepared with love using the freshest ingredients from the region. Many are even handmade by the team, such as the beautiful bread, cakes, biscuits, bunds, soups, yogurt and ice cream. Recipes are traditional to the area with exclusive specialities on offer, allowing visitors to truly experience a taste of Swiss life. “Our philosophy is that we work mainly with products from the region and according to season,” Silvia elaborates. “We focus on Sep21742 Gasthaus Höhwald Best Regional Cuisine Restaurant 2021 – Canton of the Grisons local and Swiss products. Meat, cheese, milk, butter, eggs and much more, we get from our farmers in the region. For the wines, we choose our wines from Switzerland and mainly from the Bündner Herrschaft and the neighbouring countries of Switzerland.” Highly trained and skilled staff members ensure that not only is the food and drink of the highest quality possible, but that service is efficient and friendly, uncomplex and casual yet cosy. “We pay great attention to a friendly charisma and family friendly vibe is very important to us,” Silvia continues. “We offer our guests a high standard of service but with a laidback atmosphere and an open fire.” In addition to the operation of the restaurant, Silvia and her husband, Heribert, offer exceptional experiences for all the senses, including a warming fondue on the terrace wrapped in blankets and heat pillows, or a romantic carriage ride in the snow, as well as much more. Covid-19 obviously had a huge impact on the hospitality industry, and the Dietrich family were certainly not immune to the effects. However, having recently been bestowed with the coveted title of Best Regional Cuisine Restaurant 2021 – Canton of the Grisons in the LUXlife Food and Drink Awards, Gasthaus Hohwald and its dedicated team is looking to the future. “Of course, we will continue to run our restaurant at the same level. But the situation with Covid-19 has shown us that we can only do our best but have no influence on guests from abroad. We wish that it will be a “normal” future again,” Silvia concludes. As the global pandemic eases off and people are travelling again, this beautiful destination will be on the top of many lists for the foreseeable future.
