Home & Garden Awards 2025

Home and Garden Awards 2025 | 7 Best Architectural Design Studio 2025 – Pacific Northwest USA The Pacific Northwest is a popular location best known for its coastlines, verdant rainforests, and snow-capped mountains. This remarkable region serves as the perfect backdrop for an array of innovative architecture striving to encapsulate its stunning scenery in memorable designs. Based in Seattle, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer is a leading architecture and interiors firm striving to reflect the human experience in its designs through the interweaving of architectures, interiors, and landscapes. We heard more from Steve Hoedemaker, Owner and Partner of the firm, below. Founded in 1969, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer is a multidisciplinary architecture and interiors studio renowned for creating modern yet timeless experiences. Designing homes that speak to a sense of place and personal history, the firm has a strong foundation in residential design often evidenced in its work with second homes, retreats, and private getaways. Alongside this, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer also takes on select commercial and lifestyle projects, always ensuring that the client’s vision is aligned with the firm’s architectural philosophy and values. Hoedemaker Pfeiffer stands apart for its belief that the most enduring architecture is grounded in narrative. To ensure optimal results, the firm listens carefully, designs deliberately, and always aims to create places that directly reflect the people who live in them and the landscapes they belong to. This approach has enabled Hoedemaker Pfeiffer to establish a loyal base of discerning clientele who appreciate natural materials, honest craftsmanship, and the kind of quiet beauty that reveals itself over time. “Our strength lies in restraint,” stated Steve. “In an era where speed and spectacle dominate much of the industry, we focus on creating work that is thoughtful, timeless, and quietly expressive. We’re not trend-driven – we’re story-driven. Our multidisciplinary approach allows us to shape every aspect of a project, from architecture to interior, and even to the surrounding landscape, so the result feels deeply personal. For our clients, we’re not just delivering a building – we’re creating projects that change people’s lives.” “Our belief is that great architecture doesn’t shout – it resonates. What matters most to us is creating spaces that have a quiet, lasting power. We’re not interested in novelty for its own sake. Instead, we focus on clarity, material richness, and the subtle interplay between a building and its surroundings, creating holistic outcomes that engage the full scope of architecture and interior design.” The firm begins each new project by first getting to know its clientele, learning not only what they want from the project, but also how they live, what matters to them, and how they want to feel in the space. From there, Hoedemaker Pfeiffer studies the site and its context to understand what the land itself is asking for. This approach is fuelled by the belief that design is a balancing act of aesthetics, function, craftsmanship, and emotion. As a result, the firm pays close attention to flow, light, material, and detail – understanding that it is often the smallest moments in a home that have the most lasting impact. This approach was taken in Hoedemaker Pfeiffer’s most recent project, which involved renovating a pair of houses on a 25-acre island property in the Pacific Northwest. The main challenge for the firm was time: the clients aimed to bring both homes up to date in just under eight months. Totalling nearly 9,000 ft², this required streamlining decisions and working in lockstep with contractors and tradespeople from the outset. “We are especially proud of how both homes now feel distinct yet deeply connected to the landscape and to one another,” Steve told us of the project. “The farmhouse retained its rustic simplicity, while the main house was reimagined to feel brighter and more open, with interiors that echo the tones and textures of the surrounding forest and shoreline.” The successful completion of this project sets the tone for Hoedemaker Pfeiffer’s future plans, which will focus on more projects that reflect and respond to its distinct vision. Recent developments have pushed the industry to become more sophisticated and collaborative, a challenge from which the leading firm has not shied away. With such developments in mind, we asked Steve what the future holds for Hoedemaker Pfeiffer, named Best Architectural Design Studio 2025 – Pacific Northwest USA. “Looking ahead, we’re focused on deepening our relationships with clients who share our values – projects that allow us to engage fully in both the architecture and the interiors,” he announced. “If 2024 taught us anything, it’s that trust and clarity are essential – especially when timelines compress, and expectations rise. In 2025, we’re leaning into what we do best: creating enduring, soulful homes that reflect the people who live in them and the places they belong to.” Contact: Steve Hoedemaker Company: Hoedemaker Pfeiffer Web Address: www.hoedemakerpfeiffer.com
