New Year 2019
73 1808LU16 Malones is a community driven pub working to create a home away from home for the large Irish community in Glasgow. Being the sponsor of GAA in Scotland and various teams in Glasgow, we see a large number of Irish people using our pub as a base whilst living away from home. Whilst this is an important cornerstone of our customers we are also a highly inclusive pub, so our client base is much wider than this. We are always working to provide events to suit everyone. We aim to provide a top-quality experience from start to finish for our customers, from a warm Irish welcome to a delicious cold pint. Live music is an extremely important part of our business, with live entertainment at least six nights a week bringing customers to both our downstairs and upstairs areas. Constantly on the lookout for the best local talent, we also have regular guests from Ireland and beyond playing in the pub. We have had anyone from buskers found on Sauchiehall Street to label signed acts like Ryan McMullan and Hermitage Green. We also aim to provide top quality in house sound systems for these acts, meaning that the experience for both customer and artist is as enjoyable as it can be. Sport also plays an extremely important role in Malones. As previously mentioned we sponsor GAA in Scotland but we also sponsor several University sports teams, individual boxers, Scotland Shinty and Aussie Rules teams. Therefore, we have a huge client base who are interested in viewing live sport, which is why we place significance on all sporting events, from football and hurling to golf and tennis! We have several huge projector screens and large TV’s throughout each level of the bar in order to ensure everyone has a view of a screen during events. Malones Glasgow are also an award-winning gastro pub providing fresh home cooked food every day, and we are always working at improving our menu as much as possible and refresh it seasonally which ensures that we are constantly refining the experience provided to our customers. After working closely with Glasgow City Council on the Lane Regeneration Scheme which saw all bins being removed from certain Glasgow streets, we also worked with local artist Rogue One to create a huge mural on the lane. The mural of a musician is close to our hearts as live music is such a staple of the experience at Malones. The regeneration also creates a useful space in somewhere previously unused and ensures that our customer has a good initial impression of Malones. In April 2018 Malones signed up with the Autism Awareness City Centre scheme and received training to make the business Autism Aware. We provide a quiet space for both children and adults with autism from 12pm-3pm every Monday-Wednesday. This can be used as a space for lunch and refreshments or simply as a space to get away from the busy City Centre of Glasgow. For our staff, we see personality as the most important part of the hiring process as our bar’s priority is to create a homely atmosphere, and this is emphasised to our staff when they start with us. A lot of our staff come from local Universities and Sports teams (several of which we sponsor) and several are living away from home meaning that Malones becomes a hub for staff as well as customers. Our staff are friends as much as colleagues as we have built a group of like-minded individuals who want to work together, and we find that we have an unusually low staff turnover because of this. This has allowed us to create a team that works together to maintain the warm atmosphere we seek to deliver. We are constantly complimented on the warm welcome staff provide for customers as they enter, which is extremely important to us as staff get to know customers and vice versa. However, personality aside, we Taste Catering to All provide high quality training for each new bar member as we appreciate that not everyone can have years of bar experience behind them. Several of our staff have personal licenses, making sure that we always have someone with extensive knowledge of licensing and the general running of the bar is always on shift. As the business continues to grow in popularity we have been able to expand by adding the Magners Roof Garden which has proved a hit. With a bar, BBQ, sports and live acoustic sessions in the sun (or the rain, which we are also equipped for!) it is the perfect addition to the pub and has also helped us gain an entirely new customer base. We are able to accommodate much more varied business with this addition to the bar. Being increasingly popular, we are currently working on a renovation for our upstairs bar - the main aim of which is to maximise the space within the area and make service much easier for both staff and customers. We are adding extra booth seating and more floor space which allows for both in-house dining and watching sports in our upstairs area. As the footfall in the bar increased over the last few years we recognised some limitations with the current layout of the area so we were able to pinpoint these and work to vastly improve upon it.
