Parent & Baby Awards 2024 | 11 Children in the slums of Kenya are experiencing a longform crisis, and students and teachers are in desperate need of help. Hope Markers recognises their need and is proud to be an agent for change in the region. Founders Ed and Joan Gallagher brought together a team with the shared passion of elevating Kenya’s youth and seeing them reach their full potential. Most Empowering Vulnerable Kenyan Children’s Education NGO 2024 Hope Markers students with their schoolwork and home lives, and the team has added hygiene classes to the curriculum, alongside providing sanitary products for girls. For its new partner, located in Mombasa, Kenya, Hope Markers looks forward to providing the supplies and supplemental education for teachers and students to thrive. Its team is proud to meet the unique needs of these institutions, bringing out the best in local primary and secondary education as well as families and communities in turn. These unique challenges require a keen focus on the shared goal at hand, and it is according to its values of faith, hope, integrity, mentoring, and excellence that Hope Markers’ small staff manages to have such a large impact on children’s lives. With a multi-skilled team comprising an advisory committee, bookkeeper, graphic designer, and more, the organisation pools a broad skillset together to realise Ed and Joan’s vision. “Instead of changing the world with hope one student at a time, our mission became changing the world with hope one school at a time. Our focus is to empower students, encourage teachers, and enhance school campuses.” With a steady stream of sports and school supplies, meals, and improvements to facilities, Hope Markers is achieving exactly that: it is on its way to bettering Kenya one school at a time. The team seeks compassionate donors to any one of the causes at its heart so that the team may put its all into that mission. Any amount is appreciated, and the organisation is enormously grateful for its steady rise of donor subscriptions, bettering education in Kenya with every contribution. With the exceptional work of its team and the help of these donors, Hope Markers is elevating children of the slums and Kenya’s impoverished youth, giving them the tools to forge a better tomorrow. Alongside the stunning beauty of its landscapes and vibrant culture, they also witnessed its underbelly first-hand, spending time among the slums, and taking in the ravaging effects of poverty. The couple felt a divine calling to bring hope to the people of Kenya and support the country. Through scholarships, educational programmes, care packages, providing nutritious meals, and more this non-profit organisation aims to be a beacon of light for the country’s schools. As leaders in their lives outside Hope Markers, Ed and Joan lead the organisation with the utmost devotion. As a longtime business, and strategic development leader, Ed leverages his career skills to organise the organisation’s members effectively. Between his experience and Joan’s history in mentoring and church formation, the pair share an excellent combined understanding of stewardship to match their faith. It is hard to imagine Hope Markers being in more dedicated hands. The initial fact-finding mission at Hope Markers is about speaking with students to understand the challenges they face. Mostly hailing from impoverished areas, many among them are bright young people, eager to learn, and simply require their basic needs to be met. Lacking the right nutrition and day-to-day supplies hinders their education, concentration, and proper development, which means schooling is only so effective. Food and water challenges undermine the health and academic progress of students in Kenya, ultimately harming the country. “We provide daily lunches for students and teachers. We also built a water tower on one of the campuses we support. Food, water and school supplies are essential in their daily lives.” The NGO’s dual purpose is to provide for both students and teachers and to enhance the campus environment.
