Pet Products and Services Awards 2025 | 19 Dog Food Manufacturer of the Year 2025 – APAC Originally developed as a convenient way to provide essential nutrients, dog biscuits have been a staple in canine diets since the 1800s. Now, these treats serve multiple purposes – from supporting dental health to offering a rewarding snack. No company’s name is more synonymous with high quality dog biscuits in Australia than Farrell’s, the pioneer of the country’s very first line. As Farrell’s returns to the market with the remarkable achievement of recognition in the Pet Products and Services Awards 2025, we took a closer look at the brand’s journey to excellence. Farrell’s has been a key player within the petfood industry since the early 1960’s, specifically within the realm of greyhound feeding and nutrition. The company was founded in 1962 by Evelyn Mary Farrell and her two sons, Frank and Lionel, together trailblazing the very first line of 4 x 2 dog biscuits in Australia. For over a decade, their company – E.M. Farrell & Sons Pty Ltd, as it was called then – grew to become a leader in greyhound racing, renowned for the effects the biscuits had on keeping greyhounds and puppies in top condition. In 1977, E.M. Farrell & Sons was sold to the Arnott’s Spiller Group, a conglomerate made up of Arnott’s Australia and Spiller’s UK. Entering the petfood market was not the prosperous venture Arnott’s Spiller had hoped for, and the company later sold its petfood division to Nestle Australia in 1989, minus the Farrell’s brand. At this point, the original Farrell’s petfood brand was removed from the market and discontinued. Although the Farrell’s brand itself had been discontinued, its products and formulations continued under the branding of BestCare Petfoods Pty Limited, who operated a manufacturing facility in Dubbo producing similar biscuits. BestCare and its manufacturing facility was sold to Bush’s International, which was bought out by VIP Pet Foods in 2009. After a long period of absence, the Farrell’s Family has decided to bring the brand back. As a dog owner herself, CEO and Director Samantha Salamon saw firsthand the glaring gap in the market for Farrell’s products and so partnered with Best 1 Pet Food Company Pty Ltd. Together, they introduced the original 4 x 2 baked biscuits back to the market, restoring Farrell’s long-standing legacy as a household name. Ever since its initial inception, but even more so in its revitalisation, Farrell’s has been wholly centred on the wellbeing of all animals, whether a cherished companion or a racing champion. The company is driven by its passion, creating innovative solutions for advanced nutrition that ensure the continued health and wellbeing of each canine and equine it serves. Today, its hard work and long legacy enable Farrell’s to stand as a household name for dog nutrition in Australia, and the biscuit of choice for many worldwide. Alongside its world-renowned Original 4 x 2 Baked Dog Biscuits, Farrell’s also offers its clients a range of beneficial products that support both canine and equine health. Such products include Beta Aminex, which delays muscle fatigue and improves recovery, power, and performance; Bute-Aid, a natural herbal formula that aids in the relief of sore muscles and joints; L-Carnitine Paste, an amino acid essential in the transport of fats into muscle cells for energy production; Hemo-Charge, a natural blood builder promoting red blood cell production and recovery; and Glucanine Joint Powder and Paste, a highly concentrated formulation that assists in maintaining healthy joints while reducing cartilage wear and tear. With a product line built upon tradition and a dedication to animal health and nutrition, what Farrell’s loves most is to see its clients operating at optimal performance. Led by science and innovation, all formulations have been scientifically designed to ensure sustained power and acceleration when May25105 needed the most. This unfaltering devotion to providing only the very best has enabled the company to establish not only a legacy of excellence within the petfood industry, but also a remarkable reputation amongst canine and equine owners that has led Farrell’s to be rightfully named APAC’s Dog Food Manufacturer of the Year 2025.
