6 | LUXlife Magazine Best Independent Co-Educational Day & Boarding School 2025 – South East England Situated right on the Kent coast, and therefore within easy walking distance of the sea, St Lawrence College offers a safe, spacious campus housing both boarding and day pupils from local, national, and international families. Boys and girls alike between the ages of 3 and 18 are welcome at St Lawrence, which promises them the same calibre of first-class education it has been delivering since opening its doors back in 1879. Below, we take a deep dive into what exactly this excellence entails. Home to around 400 pupils across its Pre-Prep, Prep, and Senior School – roughly 120 in lower years and 250 in higher years – approximately 140 boarders stay at St Lawrence, with boarding available from seven years of age. Regardless of whether they board or not, St Lawrence does everything it can to ensure pupils reach their academic best, all while preparing them for life in today’s evolving global society. Such balance is seen throughout the school, particularly in its blending of traditional values with an inclusive, global mindset supported by 21st‑century teaching methods and modern facilities. St Lawrence College’s Christian ethos has been the foundation of the school since it was established 145 years ago, under the Evangelical tradition of the Church of England. Although these foundations remain strong, they are lived out through the guiding belief that we are all equal in God’s eyes. That is why pupils of all faiths, or none, are welcome here and thrive. The friendly and welcoming nature of the St Lawrence College environment stems from this shared, lived experience: to understand difference, celebrate diversity, and “love our neighbour as ourselves.” The school’s vision statement reflects this, underpinning a commitment to promoting positive relationships and building a fair, inclusive community where everyone can flourish – both inside and outside of its walls. It is through this that its unique difference can really be felt. For its pupils, the result is strong pastoral care delivered alongside high‑quality teaching, with equal emphasis placed on life outside the classroom. This is achieved through a range of extra‑curricular activities that promote a strong sense of community through lived experiences that complement what is taught and learned in class. To this end, children at St Lawrence receive added value at every stage of their school experience – from the sports field and the theatre to the concert hall and, of course, the classroom. High‑Performance Learning is inherent across St Lawrence, with the school recognised as a World‑Class High‑Performance Learning School. A large part of this stems from the broad, challenging curriculum pupils are afforded, which covers a wide range of GCSE and A‑Level subjects as well as some BTEC options. Small classes are favoured across the school, allowing dedicated teaching staff to provide pupils with the individual attention they need to thrive. As well as aiming for students to achieve their full academic potential, St Lawrence helps its pupils to excel in other crucial avenues of personal development, such as sport and the creative arts. Ranked in the top 5% of sporting schools in the country, pupils of all ages can enjoy opportunities to play major sports including cricket, hockey, rugby, and netball, as well as more specialist ones such as water polo, golf, and athletics. Pupils who are more artistically inclined may take advantage of the school’s in‑house LAMDA provision that nurtures speech and drama skills and gives pupils the opportunity to take examinations and even perform at local festivals. Supporting this is the 500‑seat theatre at the heart of St Lawrence, which allows its music and drama departments to put on shows and showcase the talent of pupils of all ages and abilities. Moreover, St Lawrence College also offers a robust careers programme for its older students, helping them to make informed, independent, and ambitious decisions about their futures as they reach key stages in their individual journeys. For many, this culminates in a place at some of the most competitive universities in the UK, before a successful career in a range of industries – be they start‑up projects or well‑established firms. As all of the above demonstrates, St Lawrence College is all about enhancing the educational experience – combining timeless values and a strong academic focus with a drive to develop well‑rounded pupils who are respectful, intelligent, and excited to see what the future has in store for them! Private Education Awards 2025 | 7 n the top of Skiff Mountain in Kent, Connecticut, a vision born nearly seventy years ago continues to change lives. In 1955, Diana Hanbury King, a pioneering educator and Fellow of the Orton-Gillingham Academy, founded a summer camp for students with dyslexia or language-based learning differences. Her mission was simple yet revolutionary: provide the highest-quality 1:1 Orton-Gillingham instruction within the joyful setting of a traditional summer camp. That vision became Camp Dunnabeck. From the beginning, Diana King understood that children with dyslexia or language-based learning differences needed more than tutoring—they needed a community where they could learn, grow, and thrive without stigma. While other children spent summers at play, struggling readers were often sent to summer school or left at home with tutors. King’s solution was radical: a camp where learning could flourish alongside horseback riding, art, archery, and friendship. Parents quickly saw the difference, and in 1969, at their urging, King and colleague Kurt Goldman went on to establish Kildonan School, which carried forward the same mission. Over the decades, Kildonan expanded to include a teacher training institute and a robust educational program. When the school closed in 2019, Camp Dunnabeck found a new home at Marvelwood School in Kent, CT, where its legacy lives on with renewed energy. Today, Camp Dunnabeck is the longest-running camp of its kind in the United States, marking its 70th summer in 2025. Each camper receives daily one-to-one Orton-Gillingham tutoring tailored to their individual learning profile, surrounded by a wide array of activities that build confidence and inspire passion—from mountain biking and robotics to Founded by visionary educator Diana Hanbury King, Kildonan’s Camp Dunnabeck has been transforming summers—and lives—for 70 years. Kildonan’s Camp Dunnabeck: A Legacy of Support for Dyslexic Learners theater, ceramics, and horseback riding, a tradition dating back to the camp’s founding. The camp’s magic lies in its balance: rigorous, research-based instruction seamlessly woven into the rhythms of summer fun. Students make academic gains measured by criterionbased and standardized testing, but just as important, they leave with something harder to measure—confidence, resilience, and friendships that last a lifetime. As one parent recently shared: “Our daughter had a wonderful time at Camp Dunnabeck and met a remarkable group of counselors and campmates. She has shown such growth in maturity and, indeed, in her abilities in reading and writing over the summer. She tells us stories from camp outings and activities with such a smile on her face that we know Camp Dunnabeck was a great experience for her.” For 70 years, Kildonan’s Camp Dunnabeck has honored Diana King’s sacred mission: to reveal and celebrate the strengths of students with dyslexia or language-based learning differences. Every summer, the camp continues to embody its founder’s belief that children learn best when their minds and spirits are nurtured together. Kildonan’s Camp Dunnabeck: Where learning takes flight! 10 | LUXlife Magazine Private Girls’ School of the Year 2025 – UK Empowering girls aged 4-18 to create their own paths, Sydenham High School GDST offers a unique environment where girls of all talents, abilities, and backgrounds can develop their curiosity, a love of learning, and an understanding of who they are. Since it was first established by its female founders in 1887, the goal and ethos of Sydenham High has remained unchanged: to provide a first-class education for girls. Antonia Geldeard, Head, was on hand to tell us more. “We empower girls to forge their futures; opening eyes and hearts by educating the whole person: to balance the mind, body, and soul.” Comprising a prep school, a senior school, and a sixth form, Sydenham High is a part of the Girls’ Day School Trust, the leading group of independent girls’ schools in the UK. A rich heritage underpins this school, and whilst both the outlook and the opportunities for girls and women have changed massively in the 138 years since it first opened its doors, the spirit of Sydenham High – which was founded by four pioneering women determined to have an education as good as their brothers – has remained intact. Girls at Sydenham High are afforded a combination of academic excellence and remarkable pastoral care, stemming from an aspirational environment where they can be themselves and achieve anything they put their minds too. Pupils are also ambitious and open minded, well rounded and down to earth, and – most importantly – they are happy. “This is a happy community”, Antonia told us, “active and alive to the potential within each school day. Joyful voices resound in our classrooms and our corridors.” The atmosphere Sydenham High creates is conducive to nurturing the next generation of creators, independent thinkers, and trailblazers, with the girls who have graduated over the last few years going on to some of the UK’s most prestigious universities, Art Schools or corporate apprenticeships, studying everything from Global Sustainable Development to Biochemistry and Politics. Ensuring pupils are future ready is one of three pillars the school is built on, along with academic challenge and personal development, with these helping to prepare the girls for life. Exploring how these pillars translate to the day to day across Sydenham High, Antonia explained: “We believe that girls should learn without limits – there are no gender stereotypes here: all sports are for girls, all leadership roles are for girls, and all subjects are for girls.” This belief is reflected in the school’s Anglo-Saxon motto, Nyle ye drede – meaning ‘fear nothing’ – which highlights its innovative and forwardthinking nature. On the back of this, there is no ‘mould’ for a Sydenham High girl. Provisions are all personalised and there are no restrictive blocks for GCSE or A-Level subjects, meaning students can study whichever they choose through a timetable built around their specific needs. Not only does this create a diverse community, but the enthusiasm the girls have for their subjects sees them achieve a grade higher than baseline predictions on average. However, as with all the best schools, it is not just about grades here at Sydenham High. Sydenham High’s pioneering Futures Programme demonstrates a commitment to its students that goes beyond grades, with this initiative designed to equip the girls with the practical skills they need to thrive in an everchanging world. This is an area where many parents feel schools fall short, so it is refreshing to see such an established institution so focused on not only providing the tools to navigate the future, but to shape it. To this end, Sydenham High is excited to announce the recent launch of the Elevate Curriculum, which offers pupils timetabled periods where they study age-appropriate future skills, nurturing their holistic development in a way that is relevant to them at different stages of their journey. This develops the successful Power Skills Programme, which the school has been running for a decade to teach transferable employability skills. In a society where inequality between the sexes persists, there remains the need for a space where girls can learn without limits, and where they are free to both pursue their passions and have their voices heard. For the creation of such an uplifting educational offer, it is our pleasure to recognise Sydenham High School GDST – the top private girls’ school in South London – with a well-deserved award and place in our Private Education Awards 2025. Marsden Park Anglican College continues this legacy with a forward-looking vision: delivering accessible, high quality education to Sydney’s growing northwest, grounded in faith and committed to the holistic development of every student. As Marsden Park Anglican College is named in the Private Education Awards 2025, we heard more below from Principal Darren Cox. Marsden Park Anglican College is deeply committed to the professional and personal development of every member in its faculty. Central to this commitment is the organisation’s strengths-based culture, which encourages individuals to discover, understand, and lead from their unique strengths – both within and beyond the classroom. The college provides individual strengths coaching, team workshops, and tailored mentoring to support staff throughout their careers. “Our training programmes are designed to enhance professional practice while nurturing personal growth, recognising that who you are is just as important as what you do,” Darren told us. “Through leadership pathways, collaborative learning opportunities, and a culture of reflective practice, we ensure that all staff feel supported, valued, and empowered to thrive. Our ongoing coaching initiatives and annual appraisal system provides ongoing positive feedback to recognise and reinforce staff contributions, whilst simultaneously creating a culture of honesty, transparency, and growth.” With growth a continual goal, Marsden Park Anglican College continues to go from strength to strength. With more than 200 students onboarded in 2025 and over 200 joining again in 2026, the college is anticipated to hold more than 1,400 students by the time it reaches its first Year 12 cohort in 2029. To enable this accelerated growth, Marsden Park Anglican College will be investing heavily into state-of-the-art facilities; 2026 will see the launch of its new Senior School, 2027 will mark Stage 1 of the Innovation Hub opening, with Stage 2 to follow closely in 2028. Since its inception, Marsden Park Anglican College has aimed to serve as a respected and trusted partner to the local, national, and global communities. In less than a decade, the college has earned recognition for successfully developing young leaders of character, fostering meaningful collaborations, and making a lasting impact beyond the classroom. For its significant contributions to Sydney’s developing landscape, and its unwavering commitment to the growth of its students and staff alike, Marsden Park Anglican College has been named New South Wales’s Faith-Based College of the Year 2025. Private Education Awards 2025 | 13 Best Bespoke Private Tuition Provider 2025 More than just another private tutoring company, Tutors International delivers a highly specialised recruitment service tailored from the ground up to the needs, strengths, and interests of every student. So exclusive is this service that it is used entirely by ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) clients, who receive highly personalised tutoring anywhere in the world. In the past, this has included deep in the jungle, in the middle of the ocean, or on film sets in the desert. Founder and CEO Adam Caller was on hand to tell us more about Tutors International’s thorough approach. Tutors International is the only company of its kind in the world to offer this level of private service, with its full-time, elite-level residential tuition helping students to not only find academic success, but also to build confidence, resilience, and a love of learning that will continue for the rest of their lives. Whatever the academic challenges its clients face, Tutors International will see they overcome them – be it requiring additional help before exams, managing learning difficulties as a result of specific educational needs, or simply tailored education in unique settings such as homeschooling. “Whether it’s a full-time livein tutor, a travelling tutor, or a tutor-mentor in a niche subject, we’re all about supporting both long-term academic success and emotional wellbeing.” The company has been a trusted partner to clients now for more than 25 years, with its team understanding the specific needs and challenges UHNW parents face in their world in a way few other private tutoring companies could. Adam continued: “We want to redefine what a world-class education means to these families (and it’s not constrained just to boarding schools and formal hall). Private tutoring means an education that is genuinely personal, flexible, and which sets the gold standard.” Ensuring this is upheld across the company is a top priority for Tutors International, and something achieved by everyone striving for the exceptional. There is no ready-made pool of tutors to choose from here, every placement starts from scratch, and it is in this process that the company really lives up to this aim. For example, the team fly out to the client, meeting them and developing a deep understanding of the family. This allows them to find the perfect tutor – not just on paper, but for their lifestyle. Hundreds of applicants apply for every role, enticed by both the high calibre of the position and the salary afforded to the most capable and experienced educators, and this list is whittled down to just a choice few, who are then introduced to the family in person. “It’s bespoke and it’s rigorous – but it works”, Adam told us. “We have a phenomenal success rate with our tutor placements, and many clients often say that hiring a private tutor is the best decision they ever made.” Exploring the reasons behind this a little further, it is imperative to remember the difficult situations that the children of UHNW clients are in when it comes to their education. Their families are moving all the time – almost 150,000 are expected to relocate this year alone, according to Business Insider – and the differing educational standards and inconsistent pastoral care they face as they transfer from place to place can have a huge impact on both progress and confidence. Thus, as Adam so eloquently put it: “It’s in navigating these challenges that an exceptional private tutor makes a lifechanging difference to these children. It requires deep experience, careful planning, and an educator who understands how to connect with their student and makes learning an enjoyable process, so they can flourish independently.” This captures what it is that makes full-time private tutoring so unique – simply that it is about much more than teaching a child a subject they struggle with after school. For those families who can afford it, the exciting shapes personalised tutoring can take include designing a bespoke gap year with their own travelling tutor, having a professional tutor-mentor support them through a university course, or full-time homeschooling complete with field trips and social activities. In fact, the abundance of opportunities available is reflected through Tutors International’s sister company, Sea Tutors, which provides families who travel on yachts with tutors who combine traditional curriculum support with everything from diving lessons to marine conservation. Ultimately, this world-class international private tutoring agency highlights that these services pave the way for a rich, flexible, and bespoke educational journey, one that fits the unique lifestyle and ambitions of wealthy clients.
