4 | LUXlife Magazine or nearly 15 years now, Restaurant Toshiya has been injecting traditional Japanese culture into Sydney through its choice selection of authentic and fusion-style dishes. Taking classics like sushi and sashimi and putting a unique spin on them, the result is exciting new styles of food which offer the best of both Japanese cuisine and other delicacies from around the world rolled into one. The ability to seamlessly fuse different styles is best seen in the signature dish at Restaurant Toshiya: sashimi tacos. Although many restaurants in Sydney today serve sashimi tacos, Toshiya Kai was the first to do so from this location, as he created the trademark dish right around the time Restaurant Toshiya opened its doors for the first time. Customers travel from far and wide to try not only the sashimi tacos, which is the eatery’s most popular dish, but also the tempura gyoza and the many kinds of carpaccio, to name just a few. These are just some of the original fusion dishes on offer here to have been enjoyed for customers for more than a decade. When it comes to the selection of food served at Restaurant Toshiya, it is so expansive and equally delectable that it is recommended diners share dishes between the table. This allows them to sample the host of flavours available and maximise their unique Japanese fusion dining experience. Capitalising on the range of dishes it has on offer, Restaurant Toshiya boasts an assorted entrée menu as well as a banquet option, with both of these comprising a number of the location’s most acclaimed dishes. For those with something more specific in mind, Restaurant Toshiya’s menu is conveniently split into different sections showcasing its dishes – from its special sushi and sashimi through to such Japanese staples as nigiri, noodles, rice, and rolls. Equally as impressive are the main courses, with these spanning everything from roast duck in a sour chilli sauce to wagyu beef, teriyaki chicken, vegetable tempura, soft shell crab, sweet miso salmon, and more. Alongside these dishes is a wide-ranging dessert menu, a series of lunch options – including lunch boxes, which are a particularly good value for money – and a drinks menu that sees some authentic Japanese craft beers and even sake served at reasonable prices. Diners in search of something more familiar can find a selection of soft drinks, or there is the option to bring your own wine or champagne, which is great for toasting to a special occasion. Best Japanese Fusion Restaurant 2025 – Sydney Located in the heart of the Cremorne suburb, which is approximately six kilometres from Sydney’s central business district, Restaurant Toshiya was established in July 2010 by owner/chef Toshiya Kai. Serving lunch on Friday and Saturday afternoons and dinner Tuesday through Sunday, patrons can enjoy high-quality Japanese and Japanese fusion food in a casual environment. Wine and conversations flow freely at this culinary hotspot, which hosts some of its regular customers as many as three times a week. F
Restaurant and Bar Awards 2025 | 5 Beyond key dishes across its menus, the fusion approach taken by Restaurant Toshiya goes a step further, seen through its interior. Offering an authentic Japanese dining experience in a modern and minimalist setting, the dining area is dimly lit to make guests feel comfortable and relaxed. Given that it is a favourite amongst the local population, it is often quite busy inside Restaurant Toshiya, especially at weekends, but this is not to say that guests feel cramped or rushed. The food is served quick and the service remains impeccable. Committed to ensuring that his namesake location embodies the highest standards every day that it is open, Toshiya Kai works in a number of different areas of Restaurant Toshiya. Be it supporting in the kitchen, greeting guests, or talking people through the menu and suggesting the dishes they should sample, this restaurant owner and chef knows what it takes to be the best. Supporting Toshiya Kai on his quest are a team of equally dedicated and knowledgeable staff, without whom excellence could not be achieved. Additionally, Toshiya uniquely presents its Glass Boat Dining Cruises, which take place in its beautiful location. Customers can enjoy the flavours and sophistication of its delicious dishes upon the water, with drinks available on board, night views of the harbour and iconic attractions, 4-courses of unforgettable food, reserved seats and an outstanding waiter service, and more. As this is the only glass boat dinner cruise in Sydney, Toshiya is proud to present its innovative and exclusive offering to its many guests. Taking care of its customers is the top priority for Australian Cruise Group’s Owner Mr Warrier, Toshiya Kai, and the team here, and their success in doing so is reflected in the fact that Restaurant Toshiya is the go-to Japanese food place for many in the region, with some even coming several times a month. Even if they do not feel like eating in on occasion, a comprehensive takeaway menu means that a Japanese fusion feast can be had in the comfort of a customer’s own home, whether this be around the dining table with family and friends or in front of the television on movie night. Whether they are eating in or taking away, customers adore the food at Restaurant Toshiya, as seen in the location being in top three restaurants in the area on Tripadvisor. On the same site, more than half of all of the total reviews combined are a perfect five stars, with the destination enjoying an impressive overall score of 4.4/5. In the feedback they leave, customers are quick to comment on the popularity of Restaurant Toshiya but reinforce that the food and service are always more than up to scratch, whichever day or time they go. Outside of the Tripadvisor space, Restaurant Toshiya has been given an in-depth review by Monthly Japeria, which can be found on YouTube. The reviewer has the pleasure of sampling everything from the sashimi tacos to the salmon carpaccio and was even given a glass of the house wine to wash it all down with. The full review, which lasts around 12 minutes and can be toggled to include auto-generated English subtitles, is available here. In short, thanks to its encompassing menu of Japanese specialties and unique fusion dishes, its choice selection of authentic Japanese drinks, its relaxing ambiance, and the exemplary service afforded by Toshiya Kai and the team, it is our pleasure to recognise Restaurant Toshiya with this well-deserved award. We wish the location all the best for the rest of 2025 and beyond, urging any readers in the area to stop by and try it for themselves. Contact: Toshiya Kai Company: Restaurant Toshiya

8 | LUXlife Magazine he story of The Blonde Hedgehog began with a passion for creating a truly welcoming retreat, one that celebrates Alderney’s natural beauty, rich history, and warm community spirit. Owned by the entrepreneurial Julie-Anne Uggla and co-founded by Director and General Manager Tracey Farquhar-Beck, The Blonde Hedgehog is a boutique hotel, restaurant, and bar that blends luxury with a homeaway-from-home charm to deliver exceptional stays in an establishment dating back to the mid-1700s. With its buildings originally constructed between 1740-1750, The Blonde Hedgehog offers a collection of individually designed rooms and cottages, each with its own individual character. Named Lapins, Spikes, The Burrow, and The Den as a nod to Alderney’s diverse wildlife, each spot has been lovingly restored with modern comforts to ensure that every stay is extra special. At its core, the hotel prides itself on offering a unique experience to its guests – a stay that feels both incredibly indulgent and yet highly personal. “We like to think we’re a warm hug, a breath of sea air, and a little taste of Alderney magic.” What makes The Blonde Hedgehog truly special in a market almost crowded with unique guest experiences, however, is its ethos. “We believe that luxury doesn’t have to feel formal,” says Tracey. “Instead, we create an atmosphere where guests can kick off their shoes, sip a cocktail in the garden, or curl up on the sofa in front of the fire and feel like they’ve found their own little slice of island life. We like to think whether you’re joining us for a cosy weekend getaway, a beautiful island wedding, or simply a drink and a chat at the bar, you’ll always be welcomed like an old Best Boutique Hotel & Restaurant 2025 – Guernsey Alderney is a beautiful destination with rich historical significance, having served as a point of fortification throughout World War II. We like to think we’re a warm hug, a breath of sea air, and a little taste of Alderney magic.” Since its doors first opened, The Blonde Hedgehog has undergone significant growth and evolution, though its core values have remained at its heart. From day one, the establishment has set out to offer a “home away from home” experience, where every guest feels comfortable, cared for, and indulged. Since its establishment, the hotel has championed the philosophy that luxury should feel effortless, and that impeccable service is all about providing the personal touches – remembering favourite drinks, sharing local tips for the perfect walk, or simply being on hand to assist when required. “Our commitment to going above and beyond hasn’t changed – if anything, it’s only become more deeply rooted as we’ve gotten to know our guests over the years,” Tracey tells us. “Whether someone is popping in for a cocktail, joining us for a celebration dinner, or planning their dream wedding, we want them to feel they’re getting top quality every time. We constantly listen to our guests and adapt based on what they love most about staying with us. It’s that blend of staying true to who we are, while keeping our ears open to what our guests want, that keeps The Blonde Hedgehog evolving – without ever losing its heart.” Whilst its ethos has remained unchanged, The Blonde Hedgehog is certainly no stranger to evolution and growth. Most recently, the hotel launched Golf and Padel Packages, which showcase some of the Alderney’s best activities. Guests are invited to enjoy a round at Alderney’s scenic gold course or try their hand at padel, one of the fast-growing sports in the world, before returning to the hotel for a wellearned cocktail or delicious dinner. Restaurant and Bar Awards 2025 | 9 Best Community Pub 2025 – Oxfordshire & LUXlife Customer Service Excellence Award 2025 The Montgomery Group is a family-run business best known for its remarkable restoration of The Lamb Inn in Little Milton. In early 2025, the pioneering pub group made waves in the hospitality industry with the launch of its second establishment, The Bat and Ball. Today we speak with Ben Moss, Founder of The Montgomery Group and key driving force behind its exceptional establishments, as The Bat and Ball is named in LUXlife magazine’s Restaurant and Bar Awards 2025. The Bat and Ball is a charming country pub located in Cuddesdon, Oxfordshire. The second opening for The Montgomery Group, its founding follows the successful restoration of The Lamb Inn, a delightful 15th-century establishment only down the road in Little Milton. The Bat and Ball expertly captures and elevates the charm of the pub experience, offering a menu full of traditional classics enhanced to consider seasonality, sustainability, and affordability. On a mission to provide a hub of camaraderie and entertainment that unites and delights its patrons, The Bat and Ball strives to ensure its offerings meet each guest’s unique needs. In addition to a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere that encapsulates guests from the moment they enter its doors, The Bat and Ball also features five beautifully appointed bedrooms. This includes three spacious king suites, a king room, and a smaller double, all perfectly designed for anyone seeking a tranquil getaway in the heart of rural Oxfordshire. Since first opening its doors in January, The Bat and Ball has been focused on making its stamp on the local community and its surrounding areas. “Our intrinsic mission is to provide a truly engaging pub experience that brings people together,” says Ben. “From a quick pint and great food to a lively game of darts, The Bat and Ball is built to fit everyone’s needs. I think The Bat and Ball has achieved excellence so far and will continue to achieve such excellence due to our core philosophy and ethos.” We learn that The Bat and Ball prides itself on being centred around community, inclusivity, and a deep passion for great food and drink. As with The Lamb Inn, the emerging pub is meticulous when selecting vendors; The Bat and Ball will only work with local and like-minded suppliers, such as The Calnan Brothers, Flying Fish Seafood, DBF Banbury, and Longman’s Cheese in Somerset. With this business model at its foundation, The Bat and Ball will see continued success in its mission of integration, establishing itself as a pillar of the local community. Another key element of achieving this mission is the outstanding team driving The Bat and Ball’s success, described by Ben to be the pub’s “bread and butter”. In fact, the team have been heavily involved in the establishment of The Bat and Ball, playing a significant part of the process of tasting seasonal dishes, drinks, and helping to shape the menus. The Montgomery Group focuses on wellbeing and works with a HR partner across its locations to incentivise its workforce, promoting a strong commitment to a good work-life balance. The Bat and Ball takes the same approach to expansion as The Lamb Inn, prioritising those who are keen and possess a good attitude. From there, each individual receives ongoing training, support, and guidance to ensure that their performance continually meets the pub group’s elevated standards. Alongside this, The Montgomery Group has furthered its commitment to staff development and community support through ongoing collaboration with The Springboard Charity, offering invaluable training opportunities to young adults aspiring to enter the hospitality industry. Following a successful launch, The Bat and Ball has soared to new heights in only a matter of months. The team has worked tirelessly to ensure its seamless integration into the local community, expertly laying the foundation of a stellar reputation that can be built upon in the upcoming years. A recipient of the LUXlife Customer Service Excellence Award, The Bat and Ball has already made significant progress in its development and has been hailed as the Best Community Pub 2025 – Oxfordshire. “We officially opened our doors to the public in January and I must say that I’ve been overjoyed with the reaction,” Ben tells us. “We want to keep delivering our exceptional standard of food and drink, of course, but also make a stamp both locally and in the UK. We have only been open a short few months, so to receive a recognition like this so early on is a real privilege. Thank you to everyone who has visited us so far and supported the journey. Here’s to the rest of 2025, and beyond!” Contact: Ben Moss Company: The Bat & Ball Web Address: www.batandballcuddesdon.co.uk
10 | LUXlife Magazine Best Luxury Restaurant & Bar Group 2025 – London & LUXlife Restaurant Hospitality Excellence Award 2025 The Thesleff Group is a dynamic, ever-expanding collection of some of London’s most coveted spots. Every location under the Thesleff Group banner is entirely unique – and yet they are all united by the same commitment to hospitality and excellence that has defined this luxury set of destinations from day one. Established by namesake entrepreneur Markus Thesleff – who also serves as its CEO & Founder – the Thesleff Group was set up in 2021 to raise the standard of authentic hospitality and unforgettable guest experiences in London. The rapid growth that the Thesleff Group has undergone over the past few years can be attributed to this dual commitment to exceptional cuisine, seen through the meticulous blend of global culinary influences it seamlessly pairs with London’s rich cultural heritage. The Thesleff Group’s remarkable portfolio includes the Los Mochis Notting Hill, which launched mid-COVID alongside JUNO Omakase, an intimate six-seat dining experience hidden within Los Mochis Notting Hill itself, launched in January 2024. The group also includes Los Mochis London City, one of the highest rooftop restaurants in London, offering a pioneering blend of Mexican and Japanese dining. Tucked away within it is the newly launched LUNA Omakase, an exclusive 12-seat experience and the very first omakase in the city. Beyond these, the portfolio features Sale e Pepe, the iconic fifty-year-old Italian restaurant in Knightsbridge, and Viajante87, a vibrant and creative cocktail bar that channels the spirit of Latin America. The Thesleff Group portfolio aims to strike a balance between global trends in the hospitality industry and the timeless elegance that has come to be closely associated with the city’s restaurant and bar scene. This can be seen through the immersive experiences it has integrated into its locations, such as the TENrei Tuna Ceremony at Los Mochis London City. The event begins with the unveiling of a whole tuna, followed by a masterful breakdown using traditional Japanese knives. Guests learn about each prized cut — otoro, chutoro, and akami — while exploring the flavours and techniques behind them. Additionally, the Viajante87 Culture Exchange series brings in chefs and bartenders from Latin America, offering an authentic showcase of their skills and traditions. Beyond crafting unique dining experiences, the Thesleff Group is also committed to responsible sourcing and environmental stewardship. At JUNO Omakase, chefs collaborate with a Portuguese family-run fishing boat that follows strict seasonal limits of just 10 to 15 fish per day, helping to preserve marine ecosystems and prevent overfishing. Ingredients that are not in season are carefully returned to the ocean to support natural replenishment. This dedication to sustainability extends beyond seafood, as the chefs also source produce from local farmers’ markets and growers, strengthening ties with smaller and local businesses. The peerless luxury embodied by the Thesleff Group at every turn is achieved thanks to its staff, with the teams across all of its restaurants and bars working tirelessly to ensure that each and every customer is afforded an unforgettable visit for all the right reasons. Recognising that the welfare of its employees is vital in them continuing to uphold the Thesleff Group’s wider vision, the company became the first in its sector to offer private medical insurance for all of its employees, from the kitchen porters to restaurant managers. Starting with just 4 employers in 2021 and growing to 470 by 2024 — with a projected 550 by the end of 2025 — this remarkable growth is a testament to the power of an inclusive approach. The Thesleff Group is committed to developing its team’s skills by providing ongoing training and partnering with several industry-leading brands. Global brands such as Patrón and The Lost Explorer host spirit workshops, helping the bartenders deepen their knowledge and elevate the guest experience. They also had the honour of welcoming the 24th-generation owner of Toko Sake, who introduced exclusive expressions to the UK for the first time, allowing the team to share this unique sake story with guests at JUNO. As well as focusing its efforts on supporting teams, the Thesleff Group is just as passionate about giving back to the wider community, as seen through charitable initiatives such as the Give Back programme. Through this noble undertaking, the company has donated more than 500,000 meals to the homeless along with charities like the Felix Project, with the ultimate goal being to surpass one million delivered meals by the end of 2025. Markus is equally philanthropic himself, raising £42K as part of the annual CEO Sleepout. Ultimately, having launched from nothing in the midst of the global COVID-19 pandemic and gone on to achieve a gross turnover of more than £35M last year – projected to reach £58M by the end of 2025 – the Thesleff Group is continuing to go from strength to strength. With more than 165 international accolades to its name, it would be an honour to add the company’s acclaim with these awards. 14 | LUXlife Magazine Best Gastropub 2025 – Oxfordshire Offering perhaps the best Sunday roast in Oxfordshire, The Lamb Inn is a traditional, 15th-century English pub with about as much character and history as can be found anywhere across the country. Heading up the kitchen is chef Nat Berney, who previously worked at the renowned, five-star Le Manoir Hotel in the nearby village of Great Milton. With Nat at the helm, The Lamb Inn sprinkles innovation on a menu of hearty pub classics, making it the region’s leading gastropub. Owner Ben Moss was on hand to tell us more. A wonderful country pub at the heart of the small community of its local village, Little Milton, The Lamb Inn is housed in a thatched building made out of stone from the mid-15th century. Its décor is also based around the style of that period, with oak furniture and beams perfectly complementing exposed stone walls and a grand fire place. The result is a warm and cosy atmosphere, with this greeting the many who have entered this quaint public house since its reopening under the new ownership of Ben Moss in 2022. United by this distinct sense of community, a passion for inclusivity, and – most importantly – a love of great food drink, Ben and the team at The Lamb Inn pride themselves on the casual, friendly environment they have created, which allows customers to enjoy everything from a quality meal to a quick pint in great company. Similarly, when it comes to Nat and her team of kitchen staff, an equally strong emphasis is placed on balancing British history with culinary masterpieces, elevating British pub classics with a refined touch. The Lamb Inn also strives to treat every member of staff like family, seen in its prioritising of their wellbeing through the likes of its partnership with a HR firm and the hands-on role they are all invited to have across the business. Wanting the whole team to be as involved as he and Nat are, Ben encourages the kitchen team to contribute to the creation of seasonal dishes or the fine tuning of its menu, with the frontof-house team also doing their bit by sharing feedback and helping shape customers’ culinary experiences. Moreover, in the spirit of positioning itself as one of the best places to eat in Oxfordshire, The Lamb Inn remains committed to sustainability and sources all of its food and drink from local suppliers. Ben told us: “We work tirelessly to source our ingredients locally, with suppliers including The Calnan Brothers, Flying Fish Seafood, DBF Banbury, and Longman’s Cheese from Somerset. On the drinks front, we also participate in the CAMRA LocAle campaign, ensuring all our ales are sourced from within a 26-mile radius.” Despite remaining deeply rooted to some of the more traditional elements of the English pub experience, The Lamb Inn has seen a number of significant developments over the past couple of years, with these further solidifying its position as Oxfordshire’s leading gastropub. “For example,” Ben explained, “we have expanded the outdoor dining area which has been a key driver of trade (especially during the summer months) and we’ve increased our social media presence, utilising Instagram to showcase the food, drinks, and our events.” As for these events, they include a pizza night and a collaboration with a food truck provided by an external local company. Beyond offering something a little different for its customers, these initiatives have succeeded in bringing a community together, which is something The Lamb Inn does further by regularly adapting its menus and seeing that it has food and drink options available at different price points. Not only does The Lamb Inn constantly refine both its menu and its offerings, it is also keen on developing the skills of its staff, delivering comprehensive and cohesive training to ensure a wide range of essential skills are covered. This includes ensuring every team member has the right accreditations and offering continuous training in the kitchen to allow prospective chefs to develop their skills to commis level. Finally, the pub partners with Springboard, a charity helping young adults get their start in the world of hospitality. Having recently acquired The Bat and Ball, a new pub location which is itself featured in this programme, 2025 is already shaping up to be a great year for the pub, which is committed to continuing to deliver exceptional food, exquisite drinks, and even a better guest experience. Making local patrons and visitors alike feel right at home, The Lamb Inn is more than deserving of a place in our Restaurant and Bar Awards 2025.
