Page 120 www.lux-review.com LUX Restaurant & Bar Awards 2019 Conveniently placed next to the ferry terminal on the Hebridean Island of Tiree, Yellow Hare opened its doors for the first time in May 2018 with a promise to introduce something new to the island. Something we see everywhere in cities and towns, but in short supply in remote areas. The purpose-built unit now occupied by Yellow Hare had previously been home to a white goods store for almost 50 years, but all that was about to change. At twelve miles by five, the Isle of Tiree is predominantly-flat and attracts visitors and surfers from all over the world who call it ‘The Hawaii of the North’ due to its surprisingly sunny climate and countless sandy beaches. Population is around 700 and quadruples in high summer. Tourism, crofting and fishing are the main industries but there are also many artists, builders, jewellery-makers and joiners. Not until now has it had a dedicated Real Coffee shop. Owner Kate MacLeod talks us through how she set up a vital addition to the local community by creating Yellow Hare. “When I established Yellow Hare I wanted to offer Tiree residents and visitors what people on the mainland take for granted; really good coffee served by barista-trained staff, and I wanted to combine it with traditional home-baking made locally. The Hebridean islands are renowned for their home bakers and Tiree is no exception; it would have been mad not to use them and they never disappoint.
