They initially set up from their home back in 2006 and as the cakes continued to bake and orders continued to rise, their family home soon became a 24-hour bakehouse and it was time to expand to their very own premises. Today Cuthbert’s Bakehouse is now situated on one of the oldest streets in Liverpool. The building is hundreds of years old and a former confectioners’ shop, and as such it has a legacy of creating delicious sweet treats. It became the first tea room to open in Liverpool that sells and bakes everything on-site. Matt is a self-taught baker who draws a lot of his inspiration from New York; this is portrayed in their ‘New Yorker’ afternoon tea menu which features mini beef burgers, Reuben style pastrami bread, cannoli, red velvet cake and New York cheesecake. Other popular choices include their salted caramel brownies, chocolate Oreo cake and their renowned velvety vanilla custard tart. Seeking to provide a unique experience, the team at Cuthberts Bakery have put a great deal of thought and care into the décor of the little bakery. From the daily specials inscribed on a huge scroll of parchment paper to the magnificent display of vintage china, this is a truly innovative and creative space. A family business, Cuthberts Bakery incorporates a range of talents from throughout the family and the local community. Megan now manages the Afternoon Tea baking schedule and works closely with Elaine on bringing new recipes to life. A team of Fantastic staff support the business as Cuthberts Ambassadors. Even Elaine’s dad gets involved and builds the tiered afternoon tea stands himself. As a result of this collaborative approach and personal service, combined with the delicious treats the bakery creates, Cuthberts Bakery made it in the Top 25 Independent Afternoon Teas in the Independent newspaper last year and the lucky couple were also chosen to appear on television show Heston’s Great British Food after researchers wanted to feature people who lived and breathed afternoon tea. Seeking to build upon its current success, Cuthberts Bakery is set to grow even further over the years to come so that it can welcome even more guests. Recently the establishment expanded with an indoor garden space, to increase the covers from 35 to 60. The extension has a more industrial and open feel for diners however; compliments the traditional bakery. It has enabled the bakehouse to expand its product offer to include more vegan and dairy free recipes as well as a hot food menu. Looking to the future, Elaine is going to continue being the idea generator and Matthew’s baking skills will be responsible for bringing them to life, the duo complements each other wonderfully which is a sure-fire recipe for success.
