Spring 2019
38 Feb19017 A Quintessentially British Country Hotel Offering a Taste of True Timeless Luxury Nestled in the small civil parish of Clowne, between Chesterfield and Worksop, Van Dyk By Wildes offers a quintessentially British experience in the middle of Derbyshire’s archetypal – and beautiful - countryside. In February, the hotel was recognised as Derbyshire’s Most Outstanding Country Hotel for 2019 in LUXlife Magazine’s Global Luxury Hotel & Spa Awards programme. Following this well-deserved win, we profiled the hotel to find out more. Originally a residential abode for the landed gentry, Van Dyk By Wildes is a prime example of a Georgian-era neoclassical country house, boasting an impressive façade that simply belongs in the natural beauty that surrounds it. Perhaps it is no surprise then that the hotel has made its reputation on the back of being a wedding venue of choice for couples looking to capitalise on the hotel’s rich heritage and timeless luxury. But stopping there would be to do a disservice to a hotel that aims for nothing short of perfection in everything that they offer. With single, double, and executive rooms, alongside the exclusive Chatsworth Suite – which boasts a luxuriously stylish finish – every taste is sure to be accounted for. But, whether you opt to experience the hotel solo, or with a family, you can rest assured that the hotel will exceed expectations. Fully renovated and restored in 2009 to preserve its heritage, the hotel has kept many of its outstanding period features, recreating the grace and elegance that once permeated the hotel, recapturing an atmosphere defined by transcendent class and a very traditional sort of luxury. In everything else, the hotel aims for the contemporary, creating a pleasant juxtaposition of timeless elements with modernity. The hotel’s dining options too range from fine dining to more relaxed settings, perfect for afternoon tea. Of particular note is The Bowden Restaurant, renowned for its trademark sophistication, and creative European-inspired menu. For the gourmets, The Bowden offers a tantalising treat for the palette, combining delicate flavours with artfully presented dishes. For guests wanting to sate their inner carnivore, Van Dyk’s Southgate Brasserie has swiftly gained a reputation as the place to go for the finest grill food in the county. A firm favourite remains the restaurant’s signature Beef Bourguignon, though the extensive sweet menu is sure to receive many compliments. If the Bowden’s sophistication seems in some way lacking, the hotel offers Private Dining within the Bowden library – perfect for the most special of occasions. Indeed, it soon becomes clear why Van Dyk was awarded an AA Rosette, delighting in a plethora of dining options that will satiate any guest. Throughout it all, it is clear that Van Dyk aims to impress, proud of their ability to retain frequent return visitors, and entice newcomers in equal measure. In this, the hotel remains a firm favourite among locals and travellers alike, and, with plans for further expansion looking to be completed come the summer, guests are sure to find something to love in this long-standing stalwart.
