18 which now features almost 400 poignant tributes of all shapes and sizes. Walking through the monument feels like an act of reverence in itself. The space is light and airy, the walls adorned with a list of names so huge that it’s impossible to comprehend without being moved. Liam designed the Armed Forces Memorial with the intention that, on the 11th of November at 11am each year, the sun illuminates the bronze wreath found at its centre. This commemoration of Armistice day was inspired by one of the UK’s most famous ancient monuments, Stonehenge. LOCA has also designed and delivered the British Normandy Memorial in France. The monument commemorates the 22,442 personnel who died serving under British command at the end of World War II. The design was realised in collaboration with a team of selected craftsmen from all over Europe, the UK and the USA. When talking about the inspiration behind his design, Liam is quoted as saying, “We want people to feel a profound, elevated sense of emotion as they walk slowly towards the heart of the memorial, as it builds from the landscape towards architecture and an ever-increasing sense of the prominence of the sea and that relationship between the historic battle space of the D-Day landings and the memorial.” As you might imagine, Liam’s influence extends beyond his own designs. A frequent visitor to the United States, Liam is often invited to lecture at the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana.
