Summer 2018
60 1803LU19 In Camera Art Boutique Hotel is a remarkable example of thoughtful renovation partnered with exquisite taste. In February, LUXlife named the hotel in our esteemed Global Luxury Hotel & Spa Awards, with the title of 2018’s Leading Luxury Historic Hotel. This month, we sought to profile the hotel to find out how it achieved the success it sees today. Situated in the heart of Rhodes’ Medieval Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the visually stunning In Camera Art Boutique Hotel. Diligently restored by owner Nikos Kasseris, the hotel is a juxtaposition of old and new, of the ancient and the modern. The hotel acts as a monument to photography and artistic design – tastefully decorated with Nikos’ personal photographic exhibition. In many ways, the hotel acts as an ode and testament to the owner, a reflection of his personal tastes, and - perhaps – dream of Rhodes; a celebration of what is was, what it has been, and what it could be again. In one room, you can see the influences of the Middle East, in the Ottoman-style windows and the shades of green that decorate the bathroom. In another, a taste of the aquatic, a collaboration between sea and sky. Nikos prides himself on being the archetype of the Greek term ‘philoxenia’ – an act of welcome and hospitality, an eagerness to help, and a love outside of familial relations. It is not difficult to see this influence on the day to day running of the hotel, as every whim, and every need is catered for. Ideally located mere steps away from popular tourist sites, In Camera Art Boutique is a seamless extension of the town it inhabits, its rustic façade giving way to modern amenities and contemporary design. Yet, the spirit of the hotel remains untouched, the exterior walls betray an antiquity that lies in every corner of every room on the estate. Here is living history, a connection to a world long past. The Medieval Town of Rhodes holds its own wonders, though, of course, the Colossus no longer stands. Built to be a military stronghold in the 14th century, much of the castle walls still exist in their original form. The upper levels remain a must-visit for anyone interested in archetypal gothic architecture. In the lower levels, the Turkish Empire’s presence is most evident – as mosques and public baths mingle with the older Anglo and Hellenic infrastructure. Essential places to visit are the Byzantine Museum, and the Panagia tou Kastrou, whilst the Medieval Rose Fair remains a must-experience around May each year. An outstanding marriage of architectural design and luxurious hospitality, In Camera Art Boutique Hotel offers one of the finest experiences in Rhodes, and indeed, all of Greece. For this reason, LUXlife named the hotel among our Global Luxury Hotel & Spa Awards, as the Leading Luxury Historical Hotel.
