Summer 2020

28 Jan20128 Fusing Fashion & Science Innovation and fashion have long gone hand- in hand. Simply look back through history at figures such as Anna Wintour, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Coco Chanel, and the innovations they pioneered that changed the fashion industry. Now, a new name can take its place amongst the coveted elite of the fashion world; Julia Daviy. Fusing together nature, science, and fashion, this Miami-based maverick has been recognized in LUXlife as one of 2020’s Leaders in Sustainable Fashion – Florida. We took a closer look to learn more. February 2020 saw Julia Daviy present the Morphogenesis Bag Collection at the highly anticipated New York Fashion Week. A fusion of artistic expression, digital design, and innovative science, the collection was unanimously praised for its nuanced uniqueness and luxurious elegance, earning an eternal place in the heart of the fashion community for both Julia and her bags. A maverick inventor, environmentalist, and exceptional fashion designer, Julia ensured that each bag was made to the highest ethical and environmental standards without compromising the promise to stand as a true efficacy of exquisite taste. However, the journey towards sustainable fashion stardom is one that many will be unfamiliar with. The link between couture and theoretical biology would not be apparent to most designers. But then again, most designers didn’t begin their careers in fashion whilst also working in the clean tech field, both on renewable energy projects and water purification and treatment. Not only that, Julia also boasts expertise in 3D printing, and digital fabrication. Prior to becoming a fashion designer, Julia had been looking to achieve zero, or even positive, impacts towards natural ecosystems through the transformation of standard manufacturing processes. During her work in this field, Julia discovered immense potential in the intersection of additive manufacturing technologies, computational design, and an environment-centred approach. Thus, the Morphogenesis collection was born, but it is about far more than simply mimicking the natural patterns. Instead, Julia chose to highlight the collection’s focus on the solutions used today to radically sustain the products in the fashion industry. For three years now, Julia has been creating the fashion industry’s most innovatively sustainable garments, effortlessly blending together her love for nature, science, and fashion to incredible effect. Beginning in 2018, Julia started designing, manufacturing, and presenting the first ever collection of flexible and wearable clothes created digitally and printed out entirely on large-format industrial 3D printers. She was responsible for christening and developing the concept of additive manufacturing, with a zero-waste production cycle. Then, the course of the industry began to change. In Spring 2019, Julia launched the first ever digitally created and fully customizable 3D-printed skirts, which were subsequently named as “must-haves” in British Vogue. After a great deal of success in that area, we finally arrive back at where Julia is now, having just premiered the first collection of carbon neutral, 3D-printed bags that exude iconoclastic style and ineffable luxury. The bags were conceived as functional objets d’art, whose striking and elegant design was able to complement a wide range of ensembles. Their unique design, materials, visual texture, and production process are not only a stunning testament to Julia’s innovation, but also inspired by morphogenesis – the means by which nature produces differentiation from groups of identical cells and develops shapes. What began with a simple line as a unifying motif for the collection was quickly moulded by Julia to create variations that range from voluptuously rich to subtly understated. Each of Julia’s collections, including the Morphogenesis line of sustainable bags, is produced on 3D printers. Each bag’s material and design requires a customized manufacturing process; depending on the demands of a given bag. Expertly coupling her scientific knowledge with a keen eye for iconic design, Julia ensures that each bag uses the latest in manufacturing tech to ensure a timeless design. Crucially, all of the luxurious bags in the Morphogenesis collections are produced using additive manufacturing processes to achieve exceptionally small degrees of wastefulness and net carbon production. Julia’s painstakingly calibrated production process reduces her luxury bags’ carbon footprint by more than 92%, and radically decreases the water use, pollution, and wastage when compared to traditional leather bags product lifecycle. Just as importantly, the entire process that Julia undertakes is traceable and transparent. Whilst Julia’s journey towards fashion stardom may have been a somewhat unconventional one for the industry, it is no less stunning. Luxury abounds across all of her work, and this latest collection is yet another example of how the fashion industry rewards those whose innovation looks to go beyond themselves in serving a greater good. Julia’s ability to fuse together innovative science with luxurious design has led to some of the most sought-after sustainable fashion in the world today.
