29 Nov19536 Sophisticated collection of Osborne VORS & RARE sherry secure success D.O. Sherry has a long history, and the best providers are those who can trace their origins down that long and winding path. With a unique collection of breath-taking tipples that have been crafted over decades, the team at Bodegas Osborne earned their award for Best Vintage Sherry Retailer 2019. We delve a little deeper to see how they’ve managed it. Of all the wineries and distilleries in Spain, Bodegas Osborne is one of the most prestigious. Drawing on over two hundred and almost fifty years of experience, this family-run business has gone from strength to strength. With the seventh generation now producing the most highly sought after of sherries, it’s worth reflecting on the Englishman’s dream that made all this possible. Thomas Osborne Mann was a merchant born in Devon, though sailed to El Puerto de Santa María in Spain to make his name in the wine industry. He knew of the growing demand for sherry and made it his business. From these humble beginnings, an unparalleled collection of very old and rare sherries has been brought together, each with their own remarkable histories and tales to tell. These are drinks for the wine connoisseur, wines where every sip is to be relished. The secret of Bodegas Osborne is the heritage behind it. Having perfected a system, the current generation see no reason to change it. Much as Thomas Osborne Mann built high ceilings to allow the hot air to rise, so the same ceilings ensure that the soleras below are kept at the optimum conditions. Air flow and ventilation is allowed by multiple windows, which provides the key conditions for biological aging. With little sunlight and maximum humidity, the success of every batch year after year is assured. The most impressive part of the Bodegas Osborne collection is its assortment of rare sherries including Capuchino, Solera A.O.S. and Venerable among others. All nine wines of the collection have been recognised across the market for their exceptional quality and fine taste. The Osborne family release these wines in extremely limited quantities, some with fewer than 750 bottles 50cl per year. The demand is high, but the taste is exquisite. Awards for the range are common, with Venerable earning Platinum from Decanter in 2018 and Capuchino taking prime place as Top Wine of the Year from the same publication. These excellent wines reflect the history of the Osborne family in liquid form. All nine are exceptional, all nine are unique. Four – the V.O.R.S. wines – are sourced from one of the most renowned pays in the world: Macharnudo. They have been in the care of the family for over ten years, ensuring that they keep to the same exceptional standard. The five remaining are taken from the original soleras that made up the original foundations of the estate. Only Bodegas Osborne stocks these wines. They are the jewel in the crown of the entire collection. Recently rebranded to reflect its sought-after status, they continue to be incredibly popular choices amongst the most discerning of enthusiasts. Person after person have ensured that the name of Bodegas Osborne is held in high regard for generation after generation. This is thanks to a strong commitment to quality and tradition. The well-crafted cellars and old-fashioned methods used are key to the taste of each and every sherry. It makes them truly authentic. Only through staying true to those humble beginnings, all the way back in 1772, will the family be able to continue its long run of success.
