If you’re looking for a pleasant experience with yummy food/coffee here’s your sign!’ This is further supported by Rick Hernandez’ testimony, in which he writes, ‘First time in St Augustine and found this placed walking from our parking spot. Saw the place was packed, so you know- the food must be great! Did not disappoint. Small spot with awesome customer service, great coffee and my breakfast sandwich was incredible. Got the bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel with breakfast potatoes and a cappuccino. Don’t let the small space and wait for food deter you. Cuz [sp.] the wait wasn’t as long as it looked, and the food was worth it.’ In 2022, it is safe to say that Ancient City Brunch Bar has exceeded its initial goal and has progressed into one of the most recognisable faces in St. Augustine’s food industry. However, this year, the now 19-year-olds – who recently completed their first year of university – are heading overseas to study. So far, the twins have Two teenagers are the masterminds behind one of St. Augustine, Florida’s most popular eateries. Indeed, Sophia and Emily Schroeder began their respective restaurant management journeys at the young age of 17, taking on the responsibilities and immense pressures of business ownership that many adults cannot handle. They took it in their stride – the good and the bad – and as a result, Ancient City Brunch Bar has acquired a level of success that some can only dream of. Pioneering the term ‘bruncharcuterie,’ the high school seniors, with the backing of their mother, Melissa, took a leap of faith. Whilst Melissa provided the financial support, everything else (building the concept and menu, locating the vendors, designing the shop, and so on) fell upon Emily and Sophia’s shoulders. As such, the duo worked to their strengths, with Sophia delving into the communications and media side and Emily utilising her love of coffee to design a delicious – and now seasonal – coffee menu. But what exactly is ‘bruncharcuterie’ and how does this play into the brunch bar’s offerings? It’s simple, the now trademarked term is an amalgamation of brunch and charcuterie and manifests as a delectable range of brunch foods elegantly displayed in the form of a charcuterie board. This highly unique offering is something that hasn’t been done before, and is, in essence, a new way to enjoy a light and flavourful meal. From French toast to bagels, Ancient City Brunch Bar is home to a menu filled with America’s favourite sweet and savoury brunch treats. Even the fussiest of eaters will find something to tuck into and enjoy. Thanks to the fresh ingredients and diverse flavourings, Sophia and Emily have built a menu that is not only appetising, but also leaves guests wanting more. In addition, Ancient City Brunch Bar’s beverages stem from coffee to alcoholic drinks, including mimosas, tea, and bottled drinks. Open daily from 7:30am to 2:30pm, the company offers both dine in and take out options. As an entirely new concept in the St. Augustine dining scene, Ancient City Brunch Bar stands out, and this works in its favour. Its position in the market has been elevated by such innovation, and in turn, the brunch bar has attracted customers from far and wide, such as tourists from overseas. Consequently, the internet is flooded with positive features – including one in the popular Fodors magazine – and five-star reviews. Over 106 reviews fill the restaurant’s Google Review page, and many are completed with a shining five-star rating. One such review, completed by Jennifer Therrien, reads as follows: ‘Cute little spot in St. Augustine. We’ve been coming to the area for years now & just now discovered this place. The staff was [sp.] very kind and accommodating, the coffee was tasty, and the food was excellent. We love Charcuterie been juggling their education with the brunch bar, yet now, during term time at least, the running of the establishment will fall to their mother, Melissa. Despite their soon-to-be long-distance relationship with Ancient City Brunch Bar, Emily and Sophia are already planning the eatery’s future. The twins are setting their sights on expansion, and are eyeing up locations such as Savannah, Charleston, New Orleans. Whilst these are only plans, Emily and Sophia’s drive and ambition could quite easily bring such plans to life. For Ancient City Brunch Bar and its creators, the future shines with hope, anticipation, and excitement.
