Summer 2025

8 | LUXlife Magazine 130 Years of Pioneering and Purposeful Pursuits For almost 130 years, HX Hurtigruten Expeditions has been taking curious travellers on profound expeditions to the planet’s most awe-inspiring and remote destinations. Whether exploring the Arctic wilderness or discovering the unique biodiversity of the Galápagos Islands, the company is on a mission to change the way we see the world. Aiming to awaken the public to the planet’s pristine beauty, HX has been recognised in the Leaders in Luxury Awards 2025. We took a closer look at its exceptional expeditions below. The story of HX Hurtigruten Expeditions – and the birth of expedition cruising – began in the Arctic in 1896. This bold new chapter in exploration was forged as Captain Otto Sverdrup launched a pioneering voyage from Hammerfest to Svalbard on the DS Lofoten. This was not a mere scenic cruise, but a daring journey into the icy unknown, designed for curious minds eager to understand the world by getting right into the heart of it. This voyage laid the foundation for HX, which now continues to honour its legacy with voyages from pole to pole. Today, the company is at the forefront of expedition cruise sustainability efforts, placing strong emphasis on science and conservation. It leads the way in mindful exploration while safeguarding the destinations it explores for future generations. In a crowded market, HX stands out for its commitment to mindful adventure – blending deep immersion, science, and sustainability to offer travel that transforms perspectives and inspires lasting connection. Its expeditions span over 250 destinations across more than 30 countries, from the polar regions to South America, the Galápagos Islands, and Alaska. Each journey is carefully designed to connect guests with the natural world, local communities, and the science that helps us to understand and protect these special locations. HX operates a modern fleet of five purposebuilt expedition ships, including MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, the world’s first hybrid-powered expedition vessels. These ships incorporate advanced technologies such as large battery packs, heat recovery systems, and optimised hull designs, helping to reduce CO₂ emissions by over 20% in comparison to similar-sized ships – a significant milestone in sustainable travel. The onboard experience is also rooted in science; HX ships house the largest, most advanced science centres in the industry, with partnerships across renowned research institutions. In 2018, the company proudly appointed the cruise industry’s first-ever Chief Scientist, Dr. Verena Meraldi, who leads its science programme. She oversees a wide range of citizen science projects, allowing guests to contribute to real scientific research whilst gaining deeper insight into the environments they explore. This year marked a pivotal moment for HX and its capabilities, as the company unveiled a series of transformative upgrades across its fleet. MS Fram and MS Spitsbergen emerged from the extensive refurbishments with elevated cabins, elegant suites, enhanced science centres, and reimagined dining venues. Every aspect of the refurbishments has been meticulously designed to deliver an enriched guest experience that is rooted in discovery and indulgence. Simultaneously, the entire fleet debuted the new HX branding, reflecting the company’s ongoing evolution. Now, 2026 signals an even greater milestone, as HX celebrates its 130th anniversary. This is a significant occasion for the company, one that pays tribute to its heritage as pioneers of expedition cruising, dating back to its first ever voyage from Hammerfest to Svalbard in 1896. To celebrate, HX is introducing a range of special touches and added-value experiences to its offerings. Until 31st August, guests can enjoy complimentary suite upgrades on selected sailings aboard MS Roald Amundsen, MS Fridtjof Nansen, and MS Fram, as well as anniversary pricing on selected voyages to destinations such as Antarctica, Greenland, Svalbard, and Alaska. Alongside this, guests sailing with HX throughout 2026 will receive a 130th Anniversary badge and a commemorative Ocean Bottle gift. Finally, HX will be embarking on new adventures in the upcoming year. The company is starting a new winter expedition in Norway – the birthplace of its expedition heritage – with an seven day itinerary spent entirely above the Arctic Circle. What’s more, it has developed a special Solar Eclipse Expedition through Greenland, Iceland, and Svalbard, giving guests the rare chance to witness a breathtaking celestial event when a total solar eclipse occurs over East Greenland on August 12, 2026 — complete with expert-led talks onboard. Bestowed with the title of Best Expedition Cruise Operator 2025, HX continues to chart a bold course into its next era of mindful, sustainable exploration.
