22 | LUXlife Magazine Most Progressive UK School 2026 & Excellence in Holistic & Compassionate Education 2026 Sydenham & Dulwich Girls was established in 1887 by Maria Grey, Mary Gurney, Lady Stanley of Alderley, and Emily Shireff: four pioneering women who were determined to provide an education for girls that was of as high a standard as the education of their brothers. Over a century later, their legacy is being upheld by a team of staff dedicated to help each girl in its care to forge her own path. We heard more from Laura Hooper, Director of Marketing and Communications, below. “Ultimately, we develop sparky girls with the grit, character, and confidence to thrive.” Bridging the gap between academic rigour and genuine wellbeing, Sydenham & Dulwich Girls offers a school experience that is as joyful as it is ambitious. Part of the family of Girls’ Day School Trust schools, the independent day school caters to girls aged 4-18 years. Its original Anglo Saxon motto, “Nyle ye drede,” means “fear nothing” and underpins all that Sydenham & Dulwich Girls does. In an educational landscape often fixated on data points, Sydenham & Dulwich Girls prioritises self-discovery and future skills. The school is intentionally small by design, ensuring that every girl within its care is truly known, her individual passions are championed, and she is supported by a bespoke pastoral net that exceeds the expectations of a traditional onesize-fits-all model. Unlike many high-achieving independent schools, Sydenham & Dulwich Girls does not funnel its students into a single area of excellence. “We have students on the netball team taking part in school productions, academic scholars leading the band, and art students in the robotics club,” said Laura. “Girls cannot fully figure out who they are when restricted in what they can explore.” Central to Sydenham & Dulwich Girls’ offering is its Elevate Curriculum, a pioneering initiative informed by ten years of the school’s Power Skills Programme. Ensuring that every girl is prepared to take her seat at the boardroom table, the programme enables students to develop metacognition through unique timetabled sessions on key future skills, alongside bespoke academic extension and a broad co-curricular programme. The programme is delivered through a tailored roadmap that begins the moment a girl joins Sydenham & Dulwich Girls, with three stages: Early Discovery, from Junior School to Year 9; Bespoke Guidance through Years 10-11; and the Power Skills Launchpad in Years 12-13. Courses span financial literacy, ancient languages, visual culture, AI innovation, research, debate, nuanced communication, problem solving, and creative expression. This holistic approach to education drives tangible results; Sydenham & Dulwich Girls’ 2025 results were record-breaking: at A Level, 92% of students achieved their first choice in a university place, with 51% of all grades at A* and A and 80% at A* to B. At GCSE, almost half of all grades were 9/8, with one in three pupils achieving at least nine GCSEs at grades 7-9. “Most tellingly,” Laura added, “our Value Added placed us second across all London GDST schools – students received, on average, a grade higher than predicted. When a girl is truly known and her whole self is nurtured, her academic potential is unlocked far beyond standard expectations.” Furthermore, the school also offers the Mind, Body, & Soul Programme, a structured wellbeing framework championing emotional health and intellectual curiosity. In the Senior School, more than 175 clubs are scheduled weekly, alongside house activities, talks, and events that are refreshed each term in response to pupil, parent, and teacher feedback, as well as current affairs and research. 85% of seniors regularly attend non-compulsory clubs, with pupils participating in an average of 4.8 clubs per week. Opportunities range from Debating, Ceramics, Robotics, MUN, and Young Reporters to Goalkeeping and beyond. Feedback reported that 100% of pupils valued the opportunity to develop new skills and connect with peers, whilst 99% credited the programme for enhancing their wellbeing. Ultimately, Sydenham & Dulwich Girls demonstrates that a blend of academic excellence and pupil wellbeing is essential for creating a sustainable model of excellence. This ethos will remain the school’s north star as it enters its new chapter, a period marked by expansion and enhancement. “Our new Sixth Form and innovation and maker spaces open this summer as we head into our 140th year as a school – a very exciting milestone,” Laura shared. “We continue to refine our Futures Conferences and Elevate Curriculum offering to ensure that our girls maintain the edge when it comes to their future, and we remain committed to the pioneering wellbeing and co-curricular provision that makes Sydenham & Dulwich Girls unique.” Contact: Pete Holliday Company: Sydenham & Dulwich Girls GDST Web Address: www.sydenhamdulwichgirls.gdst.net Sydenham & Dulwich Girls
