Page 4 www.lux-review.com LUX 2022 Travel & Tourism Awards Celebrating its 50th year anniversary in 2021, Stan Stephens Cruises began back in 1971 as North Star Marine Charters, operating fishing and hunting charters on its first boat, the 26-foot motor vessel, Mary Helen. Initially, the company was run by the husband-andwife team, Stan and Mary Helen Stephens, however, the company has since become a family affair. In 1978, Stan Stephens Cruises provided its first tour to the Columbia Glacier – an excursion that would change the face of the company for good. Since that very day, Stan, Mary, their daughters, and team have worked tirelessly to develop their operations and increase awareness of Valdez and the Sound amongst travellers. Stan Stephens Cruises has an extensive and fascinating history. Since its founding, the company has strived to protect the environment, and has taken the conservation of the unique eco-system seriously. However, on Good Friday 1989, an incident would change the lives of many of the Prince William Sound’s residents. One of Exxon Corporation’s tankers, the Exxon Valdez, ran aground on Bligh Reef during a voyage from Valdez, Alaska, to California. This resulted in a catastrophic oil spill, in which 11,000,000 Explore the ice-carved landscape of Valdez, Alaska with Stan Stephens Cruises, as you plunge into the scenic world that lies ahead. From viewing magnificent glaciers to spotting orcas, the company’s excursions through the calm waters of Prince William Sound are truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Indeed, for up to eight hours, Stan Stephens Cruises frees you from the mundane day-to-day and transports you into a breathtaking environment where you can truly be harmonious with the natural world. Jan22210 Stan Stephens Cruises Leading Glacier & Cruise Tours of the Year - Alaska gallons of North Slope crude oil spread across the sound, leaving 1,300 miles of shoreline, as well as adjacent waters, polluted. Some of the Stan Stephens Cruises fleet played a role in the clean-up efforts and were some of the first to carry response observers to the site. It is safe to say that over the years Stan Stephens Cruises has cultivated a team of local experts – indeed, the Stephens family lives in Valdez year-round. Moreover, the staff are all from Valdez or elsewhere in Alaska, which ensures a level of unbeatable customer service, as the company encourages guests to directly interact with the team to ask questions or learn about the local area. Additionally, each staff member makes an investment of time to sustain and better the community by volunteering with associations that support the local commercial fishing and tourism industries, community, and the environment. Be it the 7.5 to 8-hour tour of the Meares Glacier or the 6-hour Columbia Glacier Cruise, Stan Stephens Cruises endeavours to provide an awe-inspiring experience. For example, tours offer guests the opportunity to view some of the local wildlife, including sea otters, harbour seals, sea lions, humpback and orca whales, porpoise, eagles, puffins, cormorants, and more. En route, the captain details the immense history of the Prince of Wales Sound, from the early explorers, gold and copper mining, oil shipping, commercial fishing, and the 1964 Earthquake. Whilst the Covid-19 pandemic has had a great impact on the company, the upcoming year is set to be filled with exciting new prospects. Stan Stephens Cruises have taken the events of the past few years as a chance to look internally and redevelop its operational steps, safety protocols, cleaning processes, and staffing. This season it is looking forward to hosting new guests from across the globe, welcoming them to the striking habitat. www.lux-review.com Page 5 LUX 2022 Travel & Tourism Awards Established from a childhood passion, LupoLab Food and Coffee Crafters has been recognised for the Italian hospitality that is brewed, steamed, and seared with every ounce of love and dedication. Acknowledged as Western Australia’s Best Authentic Roman Cuisine Eatery, Lupolab’s fresh, seasonal and product-driven menu permeates with the finest local ingredients that provide traditional flavours and dishes that honour the founder’s homeland – Rome. LupoLab Food and Coffee Crafters Best Authentic Roman Cuisine Eatery - Western Australia Jan22124 Lupolab is a love story and homage to traditional Italian dishes with authentic and locally sourced ingredients. The rotating menu of items is a product of Mirko Silvestri, the founder’s heritage, and passionate insight into Roman cuisine. From hand-cut pasta to speciality coffee delivered weekly, Lupolabs works hard to keep the creative integrity and craftsmanship at the peak of quality and standards by working individually with farmers and producers to ensure the best selection of products. Growing up in a traditional Roman household, Mirkos has the knowledge, the passion and the understanding of how to handmake and craft dishes from scratch, passed down through generations from Nonna to Nonna. Lupolabs is dedicated to the homestyle traditions learnt from his family and is passing down a piece of Rome and his Italian roots to his customers in Perth. Launched with guaranteed authenticity, Lupolabs began from an intrinsic passion and curiosity into the culinary world as Mirko’s witnessed his parents run their own restaurant back in Rome. Once in university, that culinary curiosity grew from food unto coffee and the process from crop to cup. Once his path was clearly set towards the food industry, Mirko completed his Specialty Coffee Diploma and became an Authorised Specialty Coffee Trainer in roasting, sensory, green beans, and brewing. Additionally, Mirko acquired his Coffee Science Certificate to entirely understand the science behind making a truly distinguished coffee. With a plethora of qualifications to solidify his passion and talent, Mirko’s then travelled through the plantations of El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras, Colombia and Burundi. Witnessing the dedicated work that the farmers produce to grow imported goods changed the way Mirko’s viewed the industry. Thus, Mirko’s Lupolab decided to honour the dedication and tireless work that went into the crops and deliver it directly to the public of Perth, Australia, where Lupolab’s in-house roastery resides. Within Perth, culture and people are diverse, enriched with an appreciation for those like Mirko, who have brought a piece of their heart into the area with a homage to heritage with local inspirations. From fresh, local ingredients to seasonal product-driven dishes, Lupolabs creates authentic, delicious and sustainable dishes that reflect his roots as a Roman and his life in Perth. The vibrant service at Lupolabs offers a casual and youthful vibe that enchants its customers with a classical comfort and familiarity all at once. With incredible views of the city from its floor to ceiling windows, Lupolab is a showstopping restaurant that invites you. From its location to the scent of the freshly cooked food, which can be seen from its open kitchen – where quality and high standards of the products used can be observed. Weaving in cultures from across the globe, team members at Lupolabs are diversified from countries such as Vietnam, Japan, Italy, Brazil, Colombia, England, America, Bhutan and Australia, bringing in warm hospitality, a sense of home and inclusion and a feeling of familiarity. While Covid-19 has shocked every corner of the earth, Lupolabs was able to remain open, ensuring that the same passion, comfort and deliciously authentic blends of culture can be received through its takeaway service. Continuing to support locals, especially during these more difficult times, Lupolabs is working tirelessly to deliver good food and friendship – the two things that people across the globe are in search of. For Lupolabs, 2022 is a year of expansion – in flavours, menu items and eCommerce. With plans in the works to shake up the local food scene, Lupolabs is bringing quality and comfort every day to those in the Perth area. Page 6 www.lux-review.com LUX 2022 Travel & Tourism Awards French barge operator, Waterways & Beyond, is the parent company of Grand Victoria Cruises, which operates a luxury river yacht in the country’s famed Burgundy region. Formerly a private yacht for the De Kuyper family, well known for their distilleries around the world, the vessel was converted into a luxury hotel barge catering to eight people originally. Following being purchased in 2015 by Waterways & Beyond, it has since been renovated from top to bottom, changing the cabin configuration into a six-passenger barge, which has created a larger, more luxurious space, including cabins, an interior salon and dining area. Waterways & Beyond offers customers seeking a getaway from the daily grind of life the chance to unwind in their own private living quarters, whilst spending quality time with their family or friends, in the intimate space of the Grand Victoria, alongside providing luxury private tours to wineries, chateaux, French Markets, and other cultural heritage sites. The firm’s focus is on its incredible attention to detail, the main unique selling points which differentiates Waterways & Beyond from its competitors. The fact that Edward and his team own and operate the barge themselves allows for a personal service, with a homogenized crew. Executive Director, Edward Anderson, tells us more about the company and its core values. “Our attentive service, featuring one crew member per guest, means that our guests are well looked after and taken care of every step of the way,” he explains. “We have the pleasure of being flexible, as owners and Whilst cruising down the river in the heart of France’s famous wine region, it’s fair to say that an air of tranquil calm descends, and life’s stresses and worries simply melt away. This is what can be experienced with a luxury cruise, courtesy of Waterways & Beyond. We speak to Edward Anderson about life on the water. Dec21700 Waterways & Beyond Most Luxurious French Barge Cruise Operator - USA operators, we’re able to change itineraries, meals, excursions, at the whim of our customers. It allows us to really focus on the pursuit of excellence that we feel all of our guests deserve.” The majority of the company’s clients, which are typically retired people enjoying their annual vacation aboard, or professionals looking to unwind from the rigors of life, book directly with Waterways & Beyond after finding them on the internet. This, along with word-of-mouth referral from happy customers, is how the company secures its bookings, so it’s clear to see that Edward’s dedication to client satisfaction is what really works. Being a family-run firm, Edward serves as Captain and Tour Guide, whilst his wife, Cindy, is the Interior Manager, and son, Alexander, operates as deckhand. Then three further members of staff are hired to complete the crew – an executive chef, which is paramount as most meals are cooked on-board. There are two meals off board and included in the price, one of which is lunch at a Michelin star restaurant and one lunch at a local brasserie after a jaunt to the market. Then there are two hostesses who take exceptional care of guests throughout their time onboard. “When selecting crew, we’re very specific in what it is we’re after,” says Edward. “Our chef has to come well recommended, as well as have an impeccable menu with the finest of ingredients. Our hostesses need to excel at hospitality first and foremost and have a good understanding of meeting our client’s needs, prior to our clients thinking they need something. It is this attentive touch, that makes cruising onboard the Grand Victoria so much more than simply a canal cruise experience.” Obviously COVID-19 has had a huge impact on everyone globally. The travel industry has been heavily impacted, with travel restrictions, quarantine mandates and just general safety for one’s wellbeing coming into play. There has, however, been a positive impact on Waterways & Beyond in that it caters to only six guests who charter the vessel, which appeals to those who are now a little nervous about cruising on a large river yacht and mixing with strangers. The intimacy of having a six-passenger charter vessel means that everyone is either friends or family and they all know each other. All the tours and excursions are private so, once again, there are no large tour busses, or mass guided tours, where the risk of Covid infection is higher.” Regarding the future of the travel industry, Edward truly believes that once the world begins to recover from the pandemic, that small private companies will flourish. Right now, the family is focusing their attentions on researching new excursions and routes that might appeal to new and returning guests, including cruises down the Rhone river to Avignon and a visit to the famous Chateauneuf de Pape, Pont SaintBénézet, and other Rhone river sights, as well as possibly cruising through the Champagne region of France. “The tourist industry is an ever-changing landscape, and as small business owners and operators, we’re always striving to be one step ahead of the large hotel chains and trends.” Company: Waterways & Beyond Contact: Edward Anderson Website: www.grandvictoriacruises.com Email: [email protected]

The two founders have built a business foundation based on their Welsh and Kiwi culture. Mark and Colin created Bamboo to embody these ideologies while adding a proud, professional, and gentle approach to their vision by sharing a passion for adventure travel, appreciating diverse cultures, and combating global issues like animal welfare and climate change. Dec21218 Arts & CraftsTours Best Bespoke Group Art Tours Operator - USA 10th anniversary of the establishment of the Court Barn museum which highlighted the work and ideals of Charles Ashbee and his Guild of Handicraft, along with the works by several other Cotswold designers. Also, there have been tours celebrating anniversaries of William Morris and John Ruskin. Additionally, Arts & Crafts Tours offers private tours for individuals and organisations. Most recently, it was delighted to have organized a weeklong private tour studying industrial and planned communities, garden cities and their patrons. The group travelled from New Lanark to Bedford Park in London and learned much about the variety of ways in which housing and communities developed. Meanwhile, it’s common knowledge that the travel and tourism industry took a hard hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. The situation was much out of the company’s control, including travel restrictions and temporary or permanent closures of private homes and public buildings. However, the growing Arts and Crafts Movement community is dedicated and resilient. And Arts & Crafts Tours’ advantage was its focus on small group tours, and as such, it was able to launch a successful eight-day tour in July 2021, following safety guidelines and protocols in the US and UK. The company is now excitedly looking ahead, with three amazing tours planned for 2022, starting with its May tour, Art and Soul: The Soul of the Arts and Crafts Movement. This will be followed by The Women of the Arts and Crafts Movement in June, and then the Yorkshire and Lake District tour in October. Also, it is working on several tours for 2023 including Scotland’s Influence on John Ruskin, a tour of Arts and Crafts Gardens, and a tour of Ireland.
