LUX Xmas 2018
Mevagissey is the very embodiment of rural charm: built around a robust fishing industry, it appears it has remained – for the most part – entirely untouched by the modern world. Hardy stone walls encircle hardy stone houses as they line up along the village’s harbour front, and bar the odd anachronistic flourish, the sight could pass as a snapshot from a century ago. Nestled, true to its name, a stone’s throw away from this harbour front is Stone’s Throw Cottage, an old Fisherman’s house with a classically rustic façade. Fran starts the interview by offering a brief overview of this special bed and breakfast: “I run Stone’s Throw Cottage by myself. My guests are mainly from the UK, but also – occasionally – from all over the world.” What it, perhaps, lacks in size, Stone’s Throw makes up for in character. Opting to take no small amount of influence from outside of her front door, Fran has decorated the cottage with the homeliest of interiors. Comfort is championed, and warmth is invited into every room. Equally, no nook or cranny goes abandoned, as small touches here and there Oct18487 tie the cottage together – this is a place to relax, unwind and enjoy. With client testimonials that are positively glowing with recommendations and praise, it seems that Fran has perfected the art of hospitality. From the breakfast, with its vast array of choice, to the slippers and treats in the rooms, she has captured a magic that seems utterly at home amongst the Cornish surroundings. Despite the rural influences, Fran has added modern amenities, not least of which is a newly renovated bathroom, and complimentary iPads. In this, Fran takes a moment to emphasise the importance of putting her guests at the centre of the experience; “It’s very important to listen to your guests, and never stop improving.” At first glance, there seems that there is little that could be improved upon. As a winner in the Global Luxury Hotel & Spa Awards, the Stone’s Throw Cottage has been distinguished as one of the best guest houses in the country. It is a quaint, yet utterly idyllic, B&B on the fringe of a beautiful part of the Cornish coast. Perfect for anyone who wants to escape and enjoy a taste of good old-fashioned hospitality, it is a joy to visit. A Cornish Masterclass in Hospitality Retreat Stone’s Throw Cottage is a four-star luxury accommodation in the small fishing village of Mevagissey, in Cornwall. In October, the cottage was recognised in LUXlife’s 2018 Global Luxury Hotel & Spa Awards as the ‘Most Outstanding Cottage Accommodation in Cornwall’. On the back of this well- deserved achievement, we spoke with Stone’s Throw’s Owner, Franziska Beranek, to find out more about this hidden treasure on the Cornish coast.
