Situated ideally between the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal in the charming town of Kintbury, The Dundas Arms 18th-century Grade II listed inn is an idyllic place to enjoy a pint or glass of wine by the river. Following our recent trip to the quaint inn, we reflect on our time at The Dundas Arms, revealing the hidden gems of the picturesque escape.
Perched neatly between the River Kennet and the Kennet and Avon Canal, in the picturesque town of Kintbury, the Dundas Arms is a traditional waterside inn with simply charming en-suite rooms.
When you take a step inside of the inn, you are mesmerised by the extraordinary décor which fills the inside of the Dundas Arms. The room is like a treasure chest, filled to the brim with distinctive nooks and crannies complete with an antique penny bar, large fireplaces and a handsomely decorated two-storey dining room – a treasure trove of unique historic pieces.
Moving to the rooms, many of the bedrooms feature their very own private terrace, allowing guests to overlook the canal whilst they relax and eat their breakfast in the morning, or to unwind in the evening, whist watching the sun set.
Each of the eight handsome rooms boast their own delightful feature, which is either a canal or riverside view. An absolute treat to see when you open your curtains in the
morning. Guests can choose from either three of the spacious upstairs House Rooms, which are all named after gamebirds, or five of the downstairs River Rooms, all named after freshwater fish species, which boast their very own private patios right to the edge of the River Kennet — perfect for summer sundowners, secluded dining or simply watching the world float by.
As you step into the rooms, you are greeted by the grand mahogany sleigh beds which have been paired with carefully selected antiques, lavish curtains and bold Barneby Gates patterned wallpaper which mirrors the décor of the rest of the inn.
Following a dreamy night’s sleep, guests can enjoy a delicious home-cooked breakfast, a perfect start for the day, or even walk, ahead. When you return from your day of exploring the beautiful surrounding areas, both you and your taste buds can be treated to a divine dish created by the Dundas Arms – farm-fresh produce and traditional British classics with an inventive twist.
Moving to the exterior of the Dundas Arms, the idyllic riverside location provides guests with the opportunity to fully relax and enjoy the peaceful view, watching the boats pass by from the comfort of their bedroom window or sat within the stunning gardens which surround the fine establishment.
For those who wish to venture further afield, in the surrounding areas of the Dundas Arms are some terrific country walks which you can do along with your canine friend. The wonderful team at the Dundas Arms will kindly supply a map as well as instructions, which means all you have to do is enjoy the country views when you embark on your adventure. Alternatively, you can swap a country walk for a stroll down the canals, enjoy the peaceful scenery and watch the boats pass by.
If you want a truly immersive experience, where you take a step back from reality and fully embrace the tranquillity that the town of Kintbury has to offer, you can travel in via train as the station is only a stone throw away from one of the Dundas Arms’ car parks.
Although our stay was short, it was a truly wonderful experience, filled with such divine foods, scenic views, a luxurious suite – all situated in a tranquil town of Kintbury. The Dundas Arms was simply an unforgettable experience!
