- Heavenly experiences invite families and friends to make the most of the Algarve’s dark skies
- Precision motorised telescope shows star clusters, distant galaxies, nebulae, binary star systems and more
- Participants also have the chance to photograph the moon as a treasured memento
Between the solar eclipse and the Perseid meteor shower, Portugal’s Algarve was treated to some incredible celestial presentations this summer. Known for its clear, dark skies and consistently warm weather, the Algarve is the perfect spot for stargazers seeking magical experiences – and there’s plenty to look forward to seeing from there over the coming years.
Most exciting in 2027 is the eclipse on 2 August. While those in the UK will see an eclipse of between 25% and 45%, depending on where in the country they are, in parts of the Algarve it will reach 99%, swapping the region’s bright sunshine for darkness at around 10 am. It will be followed on 26 January 2028 by a ‘ring of fire’ eclipse. Summer 2027 will also see another incredible display thanks to the Perseid meteor shower, with up to 50 to 100 meteors visible per hour during the peak night of August 12 to 13.
At the Algarve’s prestigious Vale do Lobo resort, guests and residents can make the most of the region’s exceptionally clear night skies.
Regular stargazing sessions provide the chance to observe brilliant star clusters, distant galaxies, nebulae and binary star systems, as well as to photograph the moon through Vale do Lobo’s high-precision motorised telescope. The two-hour sessions, the next being on 25 October, deliver a magical celestial experience, with guests invited to keep a photograph of the moon as a treasured memento.
Hernâni Estêvão, Managing Director at Vale do Lobo, comments:
“We plan and time stargazing events carefully, to ensure conditions are perfect for contemplating the wonders of the universe with family and friends. With such outstanding conditions available, many homeowners at Vale do Lobo also enjoy observing the night sky throughout the year. Sitting on your terrace with a glass of wine as dusk falls is the perfect start to an evening of admiring the heavens.”
Those not taking part in the stargazing sessions still have an incredible opportunity to view the night skies from their balconies, with a range of homes available to rent and buy across the resort. The Residences Vale do Lobo, well under construction, will offer a mix of terraces, private gardens and roof terraces, with the stylish apartments, townhouses and linked villas providing plenty of space to enjoy time outdoors. The elegant homes also come with a range of private and communal pools (depending on property type), all set amidst peaceful greenery beside Vale do Lobo’s internationally renowned Royal Golf Course.
With family members of all ages finding astrological events fascinating, Vale do Lobo is the ideal spot from which to enjoy them. Its family-friendly facilities include swimming pools, mini golf, tennis and golf coaching, and a wide range of restaurants serving up dishes to delight diners of all ages.
