Gidget Foundation Australia is a not for profit organisation providing programs nationally to support the emotional wellbeing of expectant and new parents. Gidget was the nickname of a vibrant young mother who took her own life while suffering postnatal depression. Established by Gidget’s friends and sisters in 2001, the Foundation has grown significantly and is now supported by passionate individuals, community leaders and health professionals. Nearly 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers will experience perinatal depression and anxiety that is often hidden and not fully understood. It impacts around 100,000 Australians each year, and suicide is a leading cause of maternal death.
